Anyone willing to help me with timing a 603
I need to get my 86 300 SDL 603.961 timed properly. If someone lives within 200 miles I'll drive to get this timed with an riv or AB light
It should have been in time when I put the Ip in it was on 15ATDC and the timing pin was in ect. but just never was as good as it was any help is good help |

A description of how you think it is not as good as before might help. I know little about 603s but it appears you timed it properly. Using the lockup device should be as good as using the light for practical purposes.
I guess you could set the crank mark again and check with a mirror for a centred tang. |

assuming no wear in the chain, the 15 mark is only a starting point. you still need the ab light to get the timing where it should be.

i believe a couple of members have the ab light for rent in the tool rental section for a small fee, if any.

My description of how it used to be is if I just bump the key it would lope into that nice diesel sound we all love
Now I have to crank it for like 4-6 seconds and it bucks a little the first time starting for the day then it's not so bad but I still crank it for 3-4 seconds after I run in somewhere I have balanced my injectors my self new yellow top and batt cables new lift pump tank screen and filters new stater compression numbers are 405-410 across all cylinders (pretty good huh) have about 60K on a rebuild still has cross hatching in the cylinder walls I use mobile 1 synthetic oil timing helper doesn't seem to help when I mess with it I got it where it seems to do the best |

Check glow plugs and relay.

Messing around with timing a couple of degrees isn't going to effect how well it starts. You are close enough.
The problem must be elsewhere. Maybe you are losing some fuel pressure in the IP over time and it take a rotation or two to build it back up. Once it starts, turn it off right away. Wait a little while and see if it will now start how it used to.

glow plugs are new (well 6 months old) are fine
g.p. holes reamed glow plug relay box and fuse are new I rebuilt the glowplug wiring because I have O.C.D. the clear IP to final filter banjo type fuel lines are new (with new washers) It just seems like a timing "start of fuel delivery" deal SIDE NOTE.. my side cover on the IP is leaking a litte where can I find the rubber bottom and side gasket for the 603.961 IP ?? |

Check the seal for the clear line leaving the top of the lift pump. Mine was leaking there, was very difficult to find as the leak was so slight, and even more difficult to get tight enough for a proper seal.

does that side cover on the IP fill with oil or diesel?
I figure if it is diesel and it leaks a little bit it may be sucking some air in there the gasket surfaces are so thin for that cover I don't think "the right stuff" gasket maker would really work Maybe I'll purge and change filters again I seem to change them about every 3K glow plugs are fine I OHM them out and test them with a battery charger before I put any in and if one is out the light on the dash doesn't light and it lights up any and all rubber lines (vac. and fuel) have been replaced |

oil. no air, and if it did, it would not effect operation.

If the same as the 60x engines, it takes more than one plug out (2-5 or 6) to not light.

I am currently supporting the GP theory.
But in addition, I am not sure what work you have done recently... just make sure your engine timing marks are lined up (ie.. cam and crank) |
