Minimum Specs 85 300SD front Rotors ?
I am about to replace the front pads with the ceramic ones and I believe the rotors might be warped. Anyway I am going to put a mic on them and see if they are serviceable and also check to see if they are warped before I order new rotors. Does anyone know the minimum specs on these ?

19.4 mm.
But as snookwhaler suggested, check the rotors themselves. Each rotor manufacturer may have a different minimum then the factory. . |

Yes, 19.4 mm in front and 7.3 mm in rear.
I'm not so sure about differences in manufacturers. |
Thanks. I will probably check them Thursday.

The minimum thickness is going to be partly determined by the size of the vents in the disk and the quality of the casting. It may be that the particular manufacturer has slightly larger vents or the castings have surface imperfections. When vented disks fail the wheels normally lock. Not worth the risk!! If it was 20.5mm I would consider changing them.

I will check them this a.m. and decide what to do. I know that many years ago I had a 1979 BMW 320i that was notorius for issues from front brake rotors. As it turns out they warped very easily due to inferior quality of the steel used. Those discs were made in Brazil and were well know for these issues. The front wheels on this 300SD have those brake dust shields between the wheel and the hub. My father had those put on even though I had cautioned him against it.
I will be removing those and installing Ceramic pads instead. I have a set on my Suburban and love them, plus you do not get the brake dust. The only issue is it takes a little longer for them to warm up and reach max efficiency. At least that is what I have read. I have a set of Carbon Fiber pads on my 911 and man when you hit the brakes it feels like the hand of God just grabbed a hold of your car. Anyway thanks to all. Alan |
