Windshield wiper sticking

I took my windshield wiper off a while back to put in a new blower motor. Sometimes the wiper goes 1/2 way up the window, and stops if there's not much rain water on it.

What could be causing that? It's possible I put the 4 bolts on the left side of the wiper assembly on too tight, but even so, the name of the game is making sure it doesn't move, whether it was on snug, or tight, or too tight. In no cases, should the wiper assembly move anyways.

I put a new wiper blade on a while back.

Any thoughts on what I can do?

Thanks,

Jeff 1991 300d, 151k

the 124 wiper motor has known issues, is yours one of the problematic ones?

Known issues

No, mine doesn't really have any issues. It sort of started doing it after I did the fan replacement. Doesn't do it all the time, but if/when the windshield is dry (if I'm driving somewhere when it's raining, and hours later I go to the car after the rain stopped, and start the car), it won't go the whole way. That's not normal. It should go.

Other times, during an extremely light sprinkle, even then it's not wet enough to get the wiper arm the whole way across. That too, is not normal.

I'm wondering if maybe the wiper needs to be bent outward just a touch. Maybe it's too curved for its own good. I dunno.

If the windshield is really wet, it works OK? Will the wiper blade move all the way if you "help" it? Just wondering if there is a mechanical problem in the transmission or some dry bearings.

My '87 300D Turbo (W124, OM603) started making a ticking noise while on a rainy-day trip. Turned out one of the four bolts securing the wiper assembly had started to back out and was being struck by the linkage every time the arm rotated. Tightening the bolt fixed the problem.

It your wiper mounts like the older ones, it has just one nut holding it onto the rotating thing(for a lack of better terminology). Is the nut on tight enough. It sounds like if the resistance it too high, meaning no water on the windshield, the rotating part of the motor brakes loose from the wiper and spins.

If really wet, all is well.

Yes, if the windshield is completely wet, it will work fine. If an extremely light sprinkle, where the window is dry in many places, it won't go. Might go half way, then stop.

If the windshield is dry, it might not go at all.

When it does go, there's no clicking noise. Quiet as can be.

There are 4 bolts holding it on at the base. I put them on pretty tight, but not overly so. Even at snug, to tight, it wouldn't make a difference at all. All the bolts do, is prevent the wiper assembly from being too loose. Even if super tight, it would only hold it 1/10,000 of an inch tighter to whatever it attaches to.

What type of lube do I need?

I heard the problem is the dried grease inside the wiper assembly.

What I have to do, is clean out the old grease with brake cleaner fluid, then put new grease in. Anyone know what kind of grease to use? One said to use lithium grease, but lithium doesn't spread or maybe better said doesn't move from place to place. Once it's in an area and wiped out of the way, new lithium in that area doesn't come to the rescue to fill that space.

Any other suggestions?
