Positraction

My inquiring mind got the best of me the other day while changing a flat. It appears that my 85 SD has a locking diff in it, as one rear wheel did not turn while on the jack. Is this true? If so, that's awesome!!! Did all come that way?

If it was in park and the other wheel was on the ground, you won't be able to turn the wheel in the air.
From what I understand, an LSD was not a common thing for these cars to have.

^X2, take it out of park and it should spin. If it doesn't, take the parking brake off. If it still doesn't, an LSD should still allow some slip before locking.

I started thinking about the stupidity of this thread I started, on my way to work one day. Of course the wheel would not spin with one still on the ground! How stupid of me to even think that. I guess I am used to having vehicles on a lift, not one on the ground. Go figure, I'm an ASE Master Tech, too! This is sort of an embarrassing gaffe on my part. Please forgive me.

Improper use of factory names.

Shocked to see "Posi Traction" listed in a Mercedes Forum, I decided to read and comment.

This name is the branded LSD of general motors and inaccurately used to describe far too many differentials. ( no disrespect to the OP ).

below info found here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limited_slip_differential

Enjoy.

Can anyone comment on codes/markings on the mercedes diff tags that indicate an LSD?

In the 1950s and 1960s many manufacturers began to apply brand names to their LSD units. While Packard pioneered the LSD under the brand name "Twin Traction" in 1956, the most famous of these in the USA was Chevrolet's "Positraction". Since then, Positraction (often shortened to "positrac" or merely "posi") has become a genericized trademark for LSDs in the USA.
Other factory names for LSDs include:

As a history aficionado I too appreciate the list of names for LSDs for each manufacturer over the years. panZZer, I am thinking your post is a showing of a sense of humor. If not, please excuse the sarcasm. If so, bwah hahaha I am with you. And while I do not want to turn this into a HHO thread, I tried the Smacks booster on a Ranger that was waaayy too much maintenance for its worth.

A friend was thinking a seperate alternator driven by an electrical motor all mounted on a piece of wood in the trunk--you're still powering that motor off your alternator.......

Right. Now you're losing even more efficiency than previously running off the existing system.

Per your attachment it is in fact a generecized term now. No sense getting your panties in a wad over it.
