81 300CD Vacuum / transmission issue.......
A little background first - I got this car from my brother who got it from the 2nd or 3rd owner. The car had a lot of work done before my brother got it - axle, paint, headliner and more, plus a rebuilt transmission. The previous owner had the tranny re-built and drove it until the warranty was up, all the while it wasn't shifting properly. He then took it to another shop and they (allegedly) re-built it again, and it still didn't shift correctly. He got fed up with the car and sold it to my brother for really cheap.
My brother drove it home having to wind it out and then let off to get it to shift. I think the 2 times the trans was re-built, it was probably a vacuum problem all along. We worked on the car fixing little things on the interior and getting the A/C working to give it to my daughter for her birthday. We worked on the vacuum system for a long time, hooking it up different ways, then finally just decided to leave the trans un-plugged because it would at least get into high gear eventually. Here is the issue - Hooking up the vacuum to the trans, it will not up- shift, only stays in first gear. Unhook the vacuum from the trans, it shifts hard into second but won't go into 4th until the trans is warmed up. Is there any pictorial diagram of the vacuum lines so I can be sure I have them hooked up correctly? Is there something in the trans that needs to be adjusted? Anny help would be appreciated.......Dennis
