closing IP return line harmful?

Am I inviting a problem if I pinch off the IP return line, close to where it comes out of the IP, and drive the car for miles?

What happens to the lift pump when it's deadheaded like this?

Obviously there will lack flow through the IP, but I assume the lift pump will keep pulsing pressure into the IP delivering fuel at a rate that the car is consuming.

Anybody done this?

Isn't the return line from the ip a hard plastic pipe, and isn't it the one with the banjo bolt?

In certain fault condition, one of my switching valves might deadhead this line, rather than allow flow (redirecting to the correct return tank).

The OE is hard plastic.

It's thick-walled polyurethane clear line now.

Fuel flow thru the IP keeps it cool. DO NOT pinch off the return line!

Several Years a go there was part of a thread on Fuel Supply/Lift Pumps where I thought the Pumps were positive displacement Pumps.
I think it was Numbercruncher that cleared that up.

If I remember it the Piston is pushed against spring tension and pumps that way when the Push Rod releases the Piston+Spring the Piston Going back under Spring tension also pump Fuel.

If the Fuel Outlet in the Fuel Injection System was plugged of the Piston would push against the Spring Tension and the Fuel Pressure would hold the Piston+Spring in the compressed state until some thing relieves the Pressure.

There are Fuel Injection Pumps out there that do not return Fuel. Simms inline Fuel Injection Pumps (as seen on some Ford Tractors) and a lot of the Caterpillar Fuel Injection Pumps don't have Fuel Returns on the Fuel Injection Pumps.
But, they have Diaphragm type Fuel Pumps like the older Cars used to have.

They also have an Air Bleed Screw you need to loosen to bleed the Air out when you get Air in the System.
