The transplant begins

I'm doing an engine, transmission, and differential/cv axles transplant. Just needed the engine but may as well take all i can. The replacement engine has 150k miles.

I don't need the differential and cv-axles but will just do it.

It will be an 84-85 conversion. Head up and advise is welcome, and i will part out the good stuff from the 84 and 85. Let me know if anyone wants anything. But will be posting in the classifieds before I ebay.

I'll keep everyone posted on the project and with pics.

i already noticed a couple of things are different from 84 to 85.

I was just going to do a complete engine and transmission swap but see that the shift module on the top of the valve cover is different. better yet, tracing that wire for the 85 shift module is a real pain to trace.

should I put the transmission from the 84 on the 85 engine? or can I put the vacuum set up from the 84 on the 85 transmission?

the engine comes out tomorrow so I will see, but would like some advice on this matter and anything else i might want to note about the differences in the years.

Someone else who knows better than I will answer this better, but the box on top of the valve cover on the 85 is, i believe, only for the EGR, not the trans.

I believe all adjustments for the trans are on the VCV/modulator and bowden cable.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I think that is correct

Vacuum on these models is only for the modulator thing on the transmission. It controls the firmness or softness of the shift. Shift points are controlled by the cable. I would use as much of the 84 vacuum system as you want or can. It is much simpler then the 85 system which is very complex. Get rid of the whole EGR package. Then keep the vacuum necessary for heat/AC and for in the car for door locks and other features, and it gets quite simple. On my project, 300 Turbo in place of the 240D manual, it is even easier as all that vacuum stuff isn't there to confuse me, and I am going to a "boost guage" which I can monitor instead of the automatic shut down mounted in both your 84 and 85 on the firewall near the power brake unit. Just do it and make it look nice, simply hook the turbo boost line to the Alda and tee off a line to the boost gauge.

thank you and i love you.

tracing that wire was a real pain, even with the dash off it is a nightmare.

already on the egr removal.

will use as much of the 84 vacuum as i can

sure did. and the price was just fine by me, i negotiated it down from the craigslist post. my only concern was that the engine ran after the accident and had spilt oil. pan is full and oil cooler lines never cracked. there are leaks all over the engine, but i think the only real issue is the valve cover seal.

then, trany leaks some but i am not too concerned.

the major problem is after seeing that turquoise color 300D i do not like my gray anymore, at all.

That color is beautiful. I think it's a custom repaint as there is a hand-painted "coachworks" on the rear deck.

That car was definitely a looker. The PO was a smoker though and I had to clean up the interior bits I got from it.
