Salvage yards

I went to a salvage yard in Missouri today and I have been there before, they have 4 Mercedes there. One is a 198? 300D that is in bad shape, two 190Es and one 300E. I have gotton some parts off the 300E for my 300D and some parts from one of the 190E for my 190D. There is not many Mercedes in salvage yards around here so when I find one I get what I can. I got to the yard today and the 300E was there but it was smashed! There was so many good parts left on that car, I could not believe it. They also smashed one of the 190Es that had alot of parts too, why would they do this. I went in the office to ask them why they did this, his answer was the owner of the salvage yard hates German cars. What? I told them that they are throwing money away, he said that there is nothing he can do. What a waste of good parts. So now I have to look for another parts car. Sorry just needed to vent.

What an idiot. No matter how he feels about them, willingly throwing away potential income is the mark of a truly stupid businessman.

Well, that is just the way it is. the faster they can run cars throught the yards and crush them, the more money they make. China and India are a huge consumer of scrap steel.

Here on the west coast we have PNP owned by Shnitzer steel, and they aren`t going broke. they bring a car in the yards, and a month later that line is pulled and a new row is set.

I have seen a ton of good parts that are gone for ever. I see some cars that get totally ripped apart, and then some that not much is taken offbefore being crushed.

Right now Iam pulling some parts off a 82 123 CD, and i don`t know why it in there. need a good cleaning, and looked like it would be a driver.
I pulled an almost crack free dash, blower motor, both rear axles and 2 chrome cowel vents. tomarrow Iam going back for the front fenders and maybe the hood. just those parts probably pay for the car, and the rest is profit for them.

I cringe every time I see a perfect example come in, and then some ding dong destroys something pulling a part to get to what they want. or the yard rats cleaning up around the cars, throw everything inside on the seats. dirt, greasy parts, bumpers etc...

I had a long conversation with a yard guy about this recently too. He had something like 30 123s in his yard, and about 20 126s, and then the next time I came out, he had a total of 2 123s and 15 126s.

The big thing that he said for his yard, is that a vehicle that was last sold in the mid 80s is actually not a profitable salvage yard parts vehicle from a bang for the buck perspective, depending on region. They take up the same space as a much newer vehicle, and all the parts are worth far less, plus he is catering mostly to a relatively small and obsessed DIY crowd who are generally well informed on what something should cost, and usually buy unprofitable pieces like trim, linkages, and bolts.

He crushed most of the 123 bodies that were there because he pointed out that he may see 1-4 123 owners in his yard a month, and each one of them spent something like 10 bucks. (most of his cars were really rusty, so body parts are not profitable) By getting rid of them, he filled the spaces with much newer mercedes models with more expensive parts for sale.

I briefly worked for a small salvage yard in early 2008 inventorying their cars. The yard owner had repoed the yard from a contract buyer and didn't know what was there. In total there were just over 30 MB's of various years from a 60's 190D up to W126, lots of good parts. He wasn't interested in any of it and when scrap reached the level it did that year, after I left I might add, he had the whole yard crushed and hauled away.

In the end it was a waste of my time and a waste of good inventory, but he seemed to think he knew best when in reality he didn't know anything.

It was too bad, the whole yard was import and there was a plethora of Audi cars, some quattro, especially early 4k coupes and some turbo quattro 5k's as well. What a waste.

Was just at Ecology junk yard in Lancaster California yesterday. 50 percent off parts.
Several W126's and several W123's and one... black 300TD station wagon.
All four corners were good, the car was not wrecked.

One of the 300D's was a 1982 and I swear that the radiator and other under hood parts were NEW. I stashed the radiator in the back seat.
The alda , the hand pump, the water pump, the hoses, all looked new.

We have lots of rust free mid eighties diesel benzes out where I am.
