Mercedes Powered Train

Thats right. If everything works out. I'll have a hand in creating one, It's the most Jackassed thing I think I've suggested but I think it'll work

I work with a small Railroad (not full sized mind you) in a city park about 50 miles away. We have a locomotive nobody can get working. they are using 50's era engines that are a pain and they cant seem to get it working. so, if I have my way, this train will have the heart of a 603 turbo in it, I'll be posting pictures and progress as I go through. I have to find someone willing to donate an engine to us (it's a tax write off, they are non profit!) so, what do you think? am I nuts?

Do you know the Maker of the Engines in the Locamotives?

I was twice (at different times and places) sent out to trouble shoot Diesel Engines that would not start. One was a Tractor and the other was a Loader (similar to a Fork Lift but with a scoop instead of forks).

In the end I found that both of them had compression that was too low for them to show any reaction at all when Startar Fluid was used. Not a cough or a sputter from either.
(Note: Both Engines were direct injection Engines.)

I would be interested to see them.
But, I do not think I can trouble shoot them from here.

The Tractor mentioned in the previous post was a 3 cylinder Ford with a Simms inline Fuel Injection Pump. But, it was made in the early 1970s.
The 3 cylider Engines are harder to start even when in good condition.

When the Fuel Injection Pump is worn out you can also get a no start situation. Instead of enough Fuel getting into the Injectors it goes past the Punger.
But, the symptom for that is hard starting when the engine is hot and also the Engine will try to start if you use Starting Fluid.

For a Diesel Engine not to react to the Starting Fluid the Cylinders/Pistons have to be badly worn or there has to be something wrong with the Valve Timing or Valves badly burned. Any or all combined could keep the compression too low.

Can they do a compression check and do they have specs for a compression test?

the one engine, (diesel) they had connected to some cobbled up Hydrostatic system that never worked. The original engine that came with it they kept but binned the original Trans and now cant find one that fits, every time I go out there it's a new adventure. they've ordered 6 transmissions. none of them have fit... I told them I'd get a engine trans pair and make it work.

Train work sounds more up a 617/616's alley than a 603.

Thought about that actually. I'll take whatever I can get my hands on. The 603 Will sound like a more modern Diesel, the 617 will have an Alco Chugging sound.

300Ds came as NA or turbo in the w123, honestly I think your best bet would be an OM616 from a 240D with an auto trans. Auto 240Ds are very cheap since they are slow as cars but sounds like it would fit your application perfectly. I can't see justifying the expense of a 603 for that.

Am I the only one wondering if these engines can supply enough power to move a train? Is this like a dinky Loon Mountain skiier shuttle train, kiddy train, light rail or what? Does it directly turn the wheels or does it run a generator?

this is not a full sized train. and if a crappy 4 cyl from the 50's can move the train. a diesel will do better. I'll settle for a 240D Driveline. Not looking for fast. I'm looking for movemenet. and if it's meh speed thats fine

I'd put a 616 in it. My dad has an old John Deere tractor, and the sound of the 616 is indistinguishable from that of the Deere. Plus they are bone-head simple. Not sure the scale of your train, but if its like the one at the city park in Folsom, I think the 616 would be more the powerful enough.

I'm a little jealous of your project, I'd love to work on the mini rail road

This is our 4-4-0 Crown, We think it's the last coal fired train working in a park in florida. Not 100% sure yet. Checked the other railroad site, they are 1' gauge, we run 2' still very cool

Sorry if the pic is huge, I resized it and it should catch up soon
