Bad white(ish) smoke from a 200d
Sorry I didn't give enough information: This is a 68 w110 fintail 200d.
It smokes all of the time and is even worse when accelerating. The car is not burning water or oil, and I just replaced the the leather piece in the fuel pump to control the vacuum. I was wondering if it could be a burnt valve or who knows what. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. -Thanks- Last edited by Lepidus; 09-03-2010 at 05:55 PM. Does it have a Diesel Smell to it? or oily smell, White smoke could indicate a few things...
this leather piece... where was this on the IP or lift pump?

The Leather Piece is part of the Pneumatic Governor Diaphragm.
White smoke is either Coolant or unburned atomized Diesel Fuel. When I had a lot of billowey white smoke from the exhaust it was when I had the Fuel Injection Pump timing on my Volvo too retarded/Late. This makes me think that mabe you took the Fuel Injection Pump off of the Engine when you replaced the Governor Diaphragm (the leather thing). If you did not have a burnt Valve before I kind of doubt if you have a burnt valve now. Head Gasket issue maybe. A compression test would tell you about the above.

Also the Governor Diaphragm does not control the Vacuum. The Butterfly Valve in the Intake Manifold partially blocks the flow of Air and that creates a Vacuum and the Pneumatic Governor responds to that Vacuum.
That made me think of something else. If you engine has a vacuuum pump I have read when vacuum Pump Diaphragm goes bad Oil can be sucked Into the Manifold.

Hey Kerry and Diesel911,
Is this just for a turbo set up or is it also the same for a non turbo motor? I'm not quite sure how this could be... The FSM says that if you have oily messy pre-chambers it could either be valve seals or the vacuum pump - does this mean that the route of the oil would be 1) In through the valve guides - past the seals - into the cylinder (the obvious one) 2) Past the vacuum pump - into the injector pump - and in through the fuel mixture Am I barking up the right tree?

When i replaced the leather I did not take the pump off. Also on a 200d there is no vacuum pump it works by a venturi system in the air intake. I think I might just buy a pump from a 220d and swap it out.

In the book I read when you see white smoke due to unburned Fuel what is making it white are the little particles of Diesel Fuel. In the case of late/retarded timing the I experienced on my Volvo the Fuel was being injected at a point after there was not enough heat to burn most of it. Some of the Engines made not to have a Turbocharger may have a Mechanical type Governor (like the Engines with a Turbocharger) or may have a Pneumatic Governor that works off of the vacuum in the Intake Manifold. In the Factory Service Manual I believe I saw a Fuel Injection Pump for a 5 cylinder that had a Pneumatic Governor on it and in the same section the also showed one with a Mechanical Governor on it. So the comments concerning the Vacuum Pump are for a Non-turbo Engine where the Vacuum Pump has a tube going to the intake manifold.

Interesting. I also have a 1968 200D fintail and it smokes lots of white smoke when starting and until it warms up. I've adjusted the valves and sent the injection pump in to be serviced and the diaphragm replaced, had the injectors rebuilt, and I still have this problem. The engine has massive oil leaks, one of them being from the head. It's a shame, too, because this engine is supposed to only have a few thousand miles on a rebuild. Actually, almost every good thing the seller advertised about the car was a lie.

If you are going to give up on the Fuel Injection Pump you might as well try rotating the pump and advancing the timing.
Also no one had mentioned the Injectors. Has anyone rebuilt their Injectors and had the white smoke issue fixed by that?

I had the injectors rebuilt in mine and the problem still persists.
