help with 240D (sudden loss of motor power)
i have a 240D with 250k miles. have recently replaced almost everything on the vehicle (new front end, new manual tranny, motor mounts, fuel filter, air filter, etc)
i just recently adjusted the valves, and ever since then i can barely go 55mph. i know this car is underpowered as it is, but i am pretty sure there is something not right with my vehicle. i would like suggestions on what i should do next to maximize my performance... please advise thanks jeremy |

Re-adjust the valves. Make sure that you haven't jammed up the throttle linkage.

Try swapping the supply and return fuel hose in the engine back. You might have a clogged tank screen. This will by-pass the screen. If the power comes back you know the screen is clogged. If no change then it's something else.

If your problem occurred right after adjusting the valves I would, as already suggested, go back a check your work before doing anything else.

you had the valve cover off, when you adjusted valves. odds are very good you got the linkage on wrong, or the bolts that hold the linkage bracket to the valve cover are not tight, and things are pivoting that shouldn't. have someone step on the accelerator, and observe the linkage travel.

thanks for the input gentlemen... it turned out to be the throttle linkage. the plastic or rubber pivot joint that is attached to the firewall (and the pedal pushes up on) was disintegrated. i took a good one off of a parts car and i couldnt believe the difference it made, it feels like i just dropped a 300hp engine in it!
cheers jeremy |
