190d odd instrument behavior on my commute home

while driving home today from work, i noticed that my gauges (fuel, temp, oil pressure) would jump every time i pressed on the Brake pedal. once i saw it i started watching it, and then at a light when i came to a complete stop they all dropped to zero. when i released the brake and started moving they did not return to their normal positions. they were all just at zero.

I felt uncomfortable driving with zero oil pressure (even though i knew it was a fake value), so i pulled over and turned off the car, turned it back on and the gauges were back. i started driving and the same thing happened again.

What could be going on? i also noticed that my AC would turn off and on. to be more clear, i would hear the cabin fan kick off and then back on. the air would get warm as the compressor kicked off as well.

i then stuck my head out the window and i am hearing an odd sound. i think it sounds like brushes. i am wondering if this whole thing has to do with my alternator...

I tried searching on the forum but was not finding anything like this.

cheers

X-2, I had the problem on my 85 300D, it was the ground strap.
remove it and clean the contact areas.

I will have to check that today when i get home. While driving this morning, i was listening to my AC system. The Fan Control works, and i can change it from 1 to 5, but every 40 seconds a "Click" is heard and then the Air stops blowing for about 2 seconds. My AC system is pretty much inoperable right now. Is that died to the ground strap as well, or am i looking at a dead or dying Climate Control Device?

cheers

Solved, it was Fuse #9

So after driving home today from my commute, i was told by another driver that my brake lights were not working. i know that i was having some issue with my instruments all dropping to zero when i depress the brake, but was not aware that the brake lights were affected as well.

So i got it on the ramps and cleaned the ground strap. tested and still no go. so next i checked the fuse and sure enough fuse #9 relates to instrument panel, brake lights and something AC related. This were all my problems that i had notice and after replacing it they all worked again. I went ahead and just replaced every single fuse i could. i will buy more fuses and remember to check them first every time i have some electrical gremlin.

Cheers and thanks for all those that helped out.
