I just got a new Behr radiator shipped to my house.

Comparing it to the one on the car, it seems identical except that it has two brass fittings on the bottom that are not on the one on the car.

They appear to be open to the inside of the radiator, ie: coolant will come spilling out of them if they are not closed off.



I looked at other parts suppliers and the picture of the radiator is identical elsewhere. Any idea what those are for? Do I just find a cap and some sort of gasket to close them off?

Also, this is a really ignorant question, but what is the thing between the auxiliary fan and the radiator in the front of the car (in front of the radiator if looking from the front of the car)? I had never looked too closely, but always assumed it was a part of the radiator. Now getting the radiator and looking more closely at the car, it appears to be completely separate. I looked through the FSM manual and couldn't find it, but maybe because I don't know what it is called.

I need a new radiator, myself and have the same question...parts suppliers all seem to stock the A/T version (the ports you mention are to cool the ATF in the lower portion) Should not be any coolant loss, but I am wondering if it would be better to find a proper M/T version with no ports?

Thing between aux fan and rad is the condenser for your AC

Thats the transmission cooler for automatic cars, you dont need to worry about it. No coolant will come out of them, just cap them off.

79 seems to be a transition time on a couple of things with the 240D, so I always have to be cautious that the part wasn't intended for something on the later/earlier version.

For example, the upper radiator hose I got seems to be incorrect, though I ordered according to my VIN # and the part numbers/vin # references seemed to be the same on more than one supplier (I double checked to make sure I was getting the right thing). Need to send that back and get the right one.

I thought that be the A/C condenser (looks like what is on the back of a refrigerator or in an AC unit), but when I searched google images, I only found images of the compressor.

You really don't have to cap them since the cooling section for the tranny is comparmentalized. Capping them though will keep bugs from building nests in them and someday it will be usable for an automatic if anybody ever wants it.

No, but this would be one hell of a great WVO heat exchanger! I wish I had a manual trans just so I could do this very thing!

How would it cool the VO? One would have to assume that the VO would be starting out at 180+, when it is starting out from ambient and being heated up, not cooled down. I have not checked the bottom of my radiator with an infrared, but I am pretty sure the bottom is still 180+
