Another engine swap thread

Seems to be a theme this summer. Mine is taking out a Cali motor, and installing a Federal motor. Ride along as I take this journey and document the progression. First comes getting both engines out of the vehicles.

So it has something to do with the summer???? I've just taken out my engine too!

Nice job - it looks like fun having to do it twice - though I guess you'll "only" be putting one engine back in...

I see you've been careful with the oil cooler - not going to undo those hoses then?

Routine maintenance starting @ 100K for some vehicles. We get to postpone for another 100 - 200k (or more).

Tony, what were you doing while Deb was taking the engins out?

Paul
PS: I just pulled a 560 out just for the fun of it. Easier than replacing the chain and guides with the engine in the car.

Army, I've got a 50% success rate with replacing oil cooler lines without stripping them, so I'm going to leave it in place.
Paul, actually Deb is on vacation in New York, and I'm trying to get it done before she gets back. Well, at least in the car and hooked up. I ruined the downpipe when I pulled the federal out, and Hogweed is sending me a replacement. Bad part about Deb being on vacation is I'm taking pics, but cant' get them off the camera because she's got the cable. I need me a gasser to play with next, and a 560 SEL could be just the ticket.

The diesels and the gas both have their place. The diesel is a great daily driver, good mileage, solid and safe car. The big gas cars are so much fun to drive. My 500 with the Euro engine can easily hold it's own against most cars on the road but at the same time cruise like a lemo. Only car I can drive for 6 or 7 hours, only stopping for fuel and food and not be tired. I just got the 560 so we will see how it does. The plan to remove the engine to replace ALL the chain guides and chain turned into rebuilding the heads, replacing all the rubber seals, guides and chain, oil pump guide and chain, trans rebuild (not me), replacing the differential and drive axles from a low mileage 420 (120K). So far my parts bill is around $700 not including the trans which I expect to be about $500 or less (good friend). Its strange how a simple job can grow into life long project.
Good luck on the engine swap.

Thanks Paul. It's actually in, and being hooked up. Here's some pics I had taken previously. I had to use the Callifornia Transmission, which I really didn't want to do. Had to get a special Bowden cable for it, since it's different than normal ones. Not liking the 722.4 trans'.

Jack the rear of the car up and it will help with the angle you put on the engine lift and load leveler--only by a few inches but its a lot of weight to be swinging at 45*. Add me to the list of summer-engine-removers too - finishing up my 300SD soon.

It slid right in. It's almost all hooked up and ready to go too. While I'm at it, it's getting new flex discs and center support bearing, trans filter, fuel filters, oil change (of course), shifter bushings, and different rims/tires (still bundts though). It's also getting new exhaust from downpipe back. I'm going to flush the brake system and change front calipers, and a throttle bushing.

It runs and drove out of the garage. Had to change the engine wiring harness for the glow plugs. I'm forgetting all the nuances already, and there were plenty. It's not too loud for no exhaust either. Tomorrow comes the brakes and radiator fill with Zerex G05. I may get around to the radio and climate control too while I'm at it. Now the question is do I part out the blue one, or keep it as a rolling storage bin? I know what my answer is, but what is the wife's answer??

Forgot about this bonus. The IP is a Bosch Remanufactured unit!! I knew someone took care of that car before I got it.

Good to see you are cracking on at a good rate - I've still got my engine out awaiting some remedial work... I have to get it all back together for the 16th September for the annual safety check... always down the wire...

if that blue car is rust free you shold have no problem selling it to a forum member. There are a bunch of us with good engines and rotting bodies.

Actually, the blue one has some rust, but has dents, needs a front end suspension rebuild, sunroof doesn't work, and many other issues. Hence the engine removal. I actually bought the car for the engine to swap, and ended up driving it for a few months.
