SD Cooling Weirdness

So I drove my SD today to school, drive perfect, nice smooth idle, good power etc.

I get home, and theres some smoke coming from under the hood. I figured it was the air can drain tube, sometimes it comes off.

So I look, nothing apparently wrong however, I squeezed the upper rad hose and there was no pressure in it.

I removed the exp tank cap, nothing hissed or did anything. There was coolant in there, it was low though. The gauge had been reading 78-79C all day. So I thought all was good. I have heat in the cabin..

I refilled the tank, and drove around my test track area...no change. still no pressure in the upper hose, reservoir is full. Gauge still says 78-79C

I AM CONFUSED.

That smoke... was it smoke or steam? And where is it coming from?
What amount of pressure are you expecting from the upper hose? I usually don't feel any particular pressure when I squeeze it; Sure, I can feel it has coolant inside, but not really high pressure... I'm not sure you have a problem there except for the smoke / steam...

Well I think it was steam... I saw some coolant coming out of the t-stat housing/upper hose interface (I tightened it down) It looks like it was dribbling down the housing and rolling towards the exhaust.

I still dont understand why the coolant temp never gets up past 79.

I'd expect to feel some pressure in the upper hose, on the 201 the upper hose gets hard once the t-stat pops..indicating water flow. But the SD's I could easily pinch shut...

This seems to point to a bad thermostat. However, with a bad thermostat the water would just circulate in the block, and the temp gauge would definitely rise above 79....

not exceeding 79C could just mean your radiator is working well.
the lack of pressure is because of a leak in your cooling system. either a bad cap, a leaking hose, or something broken.
you will need a pressure tester to pump up your cooling system. find where water escapes and fix it. if the cooling system holds pressure fine, no leaks at all, then you have a bad cap. change it.

Hm I dont think its the cap, I traded caps with my other SD and nothing happened.

I'll have to get a pressure tester...can i rent one from the local auto parts store that'll work?

If I'm not mistaken, these t-stats start opening at a certain temperature..and then fully open at a later temperature.
