'98 E300 Diving Into Replacing the Fuel Strainer Tomorrow... Wish Me Luck!

Well, I finally have everything I need to do this job. I'll post a pictorial with a tool and part list when I'm done...

Best of luck, the strainer is in the bolt on the bottom of the tank no?

It's probably one of the simplest procedures there is on a diesel sedan. I don't see why you'd have any trouble with it. Do you?

Why are you replacing it?

Yes, the strainer in the bottom of the tank. I have twice now, run out of fuel early - at just under an indicated 1/4 tank. When I tried to change the strainer last time, I just got a trickle of fuel out of the hose so something is definitely wrong.

Also, there's virtually no access to the strainer as well as it seems to be pretty much welded in from age so I had to buy a couple more tools and parts otherwise, the car would be completely disabled when I destroyed the strainer trying to get it off.

We'll see how it rolls tomorrow morning when I start the tank draining process.

You will be fine, It will be about as difficult for you as watching paint dry!!!
Its worth pulling the fuel gauge sender at the same time. Carefully pull it to pieces. If you have any problems with black gremlins, they like to hide in it & breed.

Did you try boicide? I have never changed a strainer in probably a millioin diesel miles, nor would I ever most likley. The biocide has always done the job for me.

Besides, what to do with the fuel that drains out?

This went well today. So well that I had time to replace a glow plug too!

Now, the big problem is that the tank has about 1/2" of black poo in it and I have to figure out how to flush it out at some point in the future.

The strainer will just block again quick !!

I like your description "black poo", thats about what it is.

Biocide is the easy answer.

If you want, you could remove the tank, wash it out with hot water & then rinse it with mentholated spirits, that will remove any residual water.

The level sender is probably full of the black poo as well & thats why you are getting 1/4 tank gauge readings when its empty.
