Looking at a 1987 300D
I'm currently looking to buy a 1987 300D and was hoping to get some input from some of you who have owned one of these cars.
I will get the cooling system pressure tested before I buy one of these. Is there any way to test whether or not the automatic transmission is in good shape. I've only driven manual transmissions for the past 20 years. The one car I've taken interest in so far has a picture of the instrument cluster with the car on. RPM's are at 700, temp is at 82 and the oil pressure is pegged at 3. The oil pressure doesn't seem right since the car is idling at operating temp. Is the oil pressure gauge on these cars electric, and therefore possibly faulty on this one? Do these cars use shocks or struts? Is the ABS dependable? Thanks

I hope you meant 700 rpm. The OE tach doesn't go to 7000. It's not uncommon for the oil pressure gauge to peg at operating temperature especially right after an oil change. It is an electric sender, though. The car uses a strut up front but not a McPherson strut. Regular shocks in the back. I haven't read of ABS problems with any W124.

yup. electrical oil pressure gauge.
Struts, and ABS is pretty decent. I'm still getting mine on the road, but I love the car. mine is a TD, and it's a creampuff, babied all it's life, but it's still full of items that need addressing. vacuum pump. exhaust manifold flex section leaks, but I patched it for now. fan clutch is getting replaced too. we'll see how it looks after that's all done.

my TD had the same few things worth mentioning, the trans cooling lines, Also most of my HVAC pods were shot to pot, most of them are easy to replace, the Center vent pod....Well. lets just say. Its been 4 months and I've yet to replace the bloody thing.

... I just got my 2nd 87 running tonight... arrrgh.
it's a D, and the CAT was totally plugged. with it out, it runs quite well. flushed the block and radiator, filled with detergent to degrease, and will be filling with G-05 tomorrow. MANY issues electrically. the interior lights blink continuously and the seats, and windows are inoperable... the fuses were not in for those items... I plugged them in, and no change. well, the radio antenna started working partially. check all these things too...
