Best way to install a cable engine shut down?

My Girlfriends 240D 4 speed is not not shutting down.

I have about 15 min of interest in following vacuum diagrams etc. Her door locks aren't working either and I had some nice advice on how to fix that here, but just find I have more important things to do than chase vacuum stuff.

She and I just want no vacuum system except the brake booster.

I want to fix the shut down with a cable.

I like the KISS principle and the Mercedes didn't follow that with the Vac system.

Bring it to someone who knows how to fix it correctly.

you'll Drive yourself mad trying to rig up some cable. It's not honestly that hard to trace a vacuum system leak, Just get a mighty vac and test the lines.

Never had a mechanic touch any of my cars for 35 years....

It will be much simpler to make the vacuum shutdown work than to install a whole new system, but you may need to violate your 15 minute rule and read the vacuum diagram.

As far as I know there are two ways these engines turn off (my knowledge is based on the om617, but I think it can be applied to your engine as well)

Method #1) via the key, when the key is turned to the off position vacuum is sent down to a solenoid on the back of the injection pump and the engine is turned off.

Method #2) via the stop lever on the linkage. Pressing the stop lever pulls up on one of the IP linkages and stops the engine.

Based on that I dont think you could rig a cable system to do it. You'd have to attach the cable to the IP linkage, which also travels in the opposite direction you'd be pulling so the cable would have to be sufficiently long so it could have full range of throttle motion. I'm not sure you'd be able to pull sufficiently hard to actuate the linkage.

Now, if you wanted to simply rig up something temporary, you could find the vacuum line that feeds the shut off solenoid (should be easy to find), extend it into the cabin... Find a vacuum source (maybe Y off of the booster line somewhere...) and put a valve in the cabin so that she could simple turn the valve so it shuts off. (its essentially doing the same thing that method #1 would do)

However this might not work if you have a broken vacuum shutoff solenoid.


And on the vaccuum door locks, I'm not entirely sure how the 123 chassis is but the 126 and 201 have a separate electric vacuum pump for the locking system.

Prolly right that it will take less time to fix it than rig a cable. When I'm calm I will look at it. Meanwhile she will continue to stall it with the clutch.

I'm used to cable shut downs on other diesels and I like them.

Did the car take a while to shut off? Did it take a second or two AFTER the key was turned off for the car to actually shut off? If yes, you might want to check that solenoid on injection pump.

The easiest one is simply to run some Vacuum Hose from the Vacuum Shutoff on the IP that is long enough to reach the Driver and have the Driver simply suck on the Vacuum Hose.
That part of the job can be done in 15 minutes.

If you or the GF are embarrassed about sucking on a Hose in public you might provide some sort of Bulb to squeeze like one of those Fuel Transfer type hose setups with a Bulb.

Or find something else suitable to create the Vacuum.

The above assumes the Vacuum Shutoff on the IP is good.

There is a universal choke cable that all the parts stores carry... Personally, I think that the only reason there is the vacuum shutoff system is because mercedes was trying really hard to make it so that the normal people just turn the key counterclockwise and the car turns off... if they did not have that constraint, there would've been a cable pull shutoff.

Having said that, chances are that your vacuum leak is in the 2/3 vacuum switch on top of the valve cover and that can be replaced for about $20 bucks.

Also, no vacuum pump => no brake booster...

Plug off the door lock system and be done with it. All you need are 2 lines, one to the shutoff (brown) and one to the climate control (green).

The KISS principle is the SUCK principle in this case. It takes precisely 43 seconds to pull off the brown vacuum line to the shut off valve, put a piece of rubber vacuum line in it's place and feed it out thru the cowling sticking up near the wipers. Any potential embarrassment can be avoided by appearing to make a close examination of the wiper blades when sucking on the hose.
