240D Cruise Control???

I have an 82 240D with 4 speed. Since joining the forum a couple of weeks ago, I have had a lot of questions. Y'all have been a great resource of information. Another burning question I have is my Haynes manual has a picture of a cruise control actuator, which looks identical to the one on my car. It sits next to the power steering pump in the front left of the engine, it has linkage to the throttle, and it is wired into the harness through an 8 pin connector mounted on the fender. However, my car does not have cruise control? Is this really a cruise control actuator? Why would a non-cruise control vehicle have one?

I have owned the car 6 years and have the original owners manual, and the engine number checks out as the original.

Yes that is perplexing. I'd have thought that
C.C. was standard. Hey you may have
a computer under the dash as well.

Maybe an engine change? Take a look above the drivers footwell and see if you have the cc amp in there. If you do then the only thing left that you may need is the stalk on the steering column. Maybe they put all the parts in there and let the dealer add the stalk for a cc option?

I'll check for the amp after Christmas. I replaced an axle shaft today. 'Not too bad of a job thanks to the posts on the subject. Probably will regret not changing them both.

During the test drive, the accelerator pivot mount (little plastic ball mounted on the firewall that the throttle pivots in) pulled out of the ball. I put a bigger washer on it so it wouldn't pull through. Not sure why the washer on it wasn't bigger???

I'll report back on the amp later. BTW, I didn't see a speed sensor when I pulled the engine. Probably should be one on the drive shaft.

Evidently, I also have an amp. There is a silver box under the dash that appears to be connected to actuator wiring. There is no cruise control switch on the steering wheel. So either it had cruise control originally and the switch was removed, or it was never installed. Probably the latter, since this one also has no right hand mirror, or tachometer, indicating that it had the fewest options at delivery.

If my assessment is correct, where would I find the speed sensor? If it only lacks the switch, I might try and retrofit a switch. Anyone else have a 240D with almost cruise control????

this is interesting to me, because my cousin has a 87 325is BMW, it did'nt have cruise control. they had to take the steering assembly apart to get to the turn signle flasher and low and behold there was a cruise control stalk in there. And oddly enough, it popped right into the hole that i plastic cover peice was covering up. They did some research, and the car was delivered "without cruse, but for X hundred dollars we'd be glad to install it for you". You can tell by the look of the stalk that it hasn't ever been used, as it looks nice and clean/new and the other ones look used/old faded. I found that pretty interesting, maybe mercedes did the same thing!
