Removing Ignition Switch Plug From Broken Switch
The factory manual states that after 1980 the ignition switch plug can only be removed when the key is in the #1 position. My switch and/or steering lock seams broke so that the vacuum and electrical switches are not turning. The lobes on the tumbler are good so I know that is turning the lock, but nothing is turning past that. I'm attempting to remove the lock, but I cannot unplug it. If I cannot unplug it without turning it what can I do? A new connector, switch and lock?

I am not entirely clear on what you mean. The Plug/Connector I believe has a central Nut or Screw that keeps it shoved in.
The Ignition Switch (not the Key Tumbler is retained with 3 screws). I believe it has been covered before in the DIY links. I have not done this job before but about 3 months ago there was a thread concerning changing the Ignition Switch and in this case the Key Tumbler was OK and the Key could be turned into any position. They said they still had to remove the Steering Colum Lock assembly from the Colum because the 3 Screws that held the Switch in were too hard to get at. So from the above info it may be you need to look at the Steering Colum section in the Factory Service Manual and see about removing the whole Steering Colum Lock assembly. There is DIY repairs in our forum on what to do about the Key Tumbler not turning. Thanks for the reply. I just solved the problem. The tumbler turned fine, but the ears on the lock that rotate the switch were broken, so when the lock was turned, the switch wasn't. The connector cannot be disconnected unless the key/lock/switch is in the #1 position. Since the switch was not turning it was not releasing the connector.
What i did was this: - removed the steering column nuts and lowered column. - removed the lock assembly while still connected. This was not easy since the wires do not have much slack. - drilled holes in the back of the connector to access the switch to lock screws. - Removed the switch from the lock, turned the switch from the front, and the connector poped right off. I don't know if this was the right thing to do but it worked. The car no longer needs to be started with an extension cord & light switch.
