Overfull transmission. Effects?
My son's new 85 123 has at least an extra pint, maybe two in the tranny. The reading on the dipstick is one inch above full. It was checked warm and running. Just determined this and will drain the excess ASAP. My question is, how would this make the transmission act and what will it damage? Currently the tranny likes to shift at speeds a little higher than normal and won't shift into 4th until 50+. Can I expect better shifting when the level is proper? Or will the fluid level have no effect on how it shifts? I'll drain the excess tomorrow, just wondering what to expect. TIA.

Shouldn't make any difference shifting
Correct levels will avoid excess leakage from seals and O rings. It might cause a bit of extra heat if the level is really high. Not to worry but also don't expect much better shifting. Cheers

Overfilled transmissions have foaming fluid. Foaming fluid doesn't lubricate well, so it wouldn't give you characteristics of better shifting.

Im not sure about the effects of being overfilled, but if there is a cable that runs down to the engine on your 123 like there is on my 126 (pretty sure there is) It is called your bowden cable. The cable is attached to the linkage assembly that actuates the injection pump. There is an adjustment for it ontop of the engine near the linkage assembly connected to the injection pump. This will adjust at what rpm your transmission changes gears. Shifting into 4th at 50mph with light acceleration is silly. Screw your bowden adjustment in about 2 or 3 turns and you should be all set. How cool is it that you can pop your hood and adjust your trans shift points with no tools in about 10 seconds. I love these cars....

I didn't want to touch the bowden until I had the correct level in the trans. Haven't had a chance to do that yet. Maybe tomorrow. Thanks for the input.

That sucks.... I had that happen to me the last time I pulled the pan and filled it. It was about 2 inches above the top mark.
Last month I finally dumped a bunch out and the level was barely on the stick. I went for a 15 minute drive, came back and checked it again. It was right on the money. 2 days later I went for a "3 hour tour". When I fueled up I checked it again and it was still 2 inches up on the damn stick!! Back to the drawing board...

You didn't have any adverse trans. issues with it that full?
