My Benz died today

Today, my '83 300SD decided to move to the great benz lot in the sky.

At 915AM on 16 Sep 2010 while driving on the freeway, one of the pistons in the engine decided it didn't want to play with the rest of the team anymore and left the engine (through the bottom).

"Rocky" was a great car and will be missed.

Is there no chance of replacing the engine with a good used one?

Changing an engine may sound daunting, but really isnt hard....

Grab a used 617 and keep on trucking! I did that when my first SD's engine went blammo... Bruno lasted another three years and 100,000 mi before rust and a bad flex plate got him...

It really depends on the condition of the rest of the car, if it's in good shape it's probably worth the cost/time/hassle of installing another engine.

I agree, When Bruno's second engine seized (turned out it was the flex plate) I decided nit to put a third one into a rusting '81 300SD. I found Rudy the '86 SDL and fell in love with the larger car and the 603 engine. For about what a decent 617 would have cost I got the entire car!

How sad. But I agree with the other posters, if the body is good, find a replacement engine.

That is not very common on these motors. How many miles were on the motor, are you sure it was full of clean oil?

Sorry for your loss.

If it is a CA car, it is likely rust free, fix it!

How many miles on the engine? Was it ever tortured with WVO or other nasty substances?

How many miles on that engine? Did you notice something strange before? Usually cars tell you they're going kabloie before they do...

I would love to replace the engine, but alas, I have not the time nor the money to do so.

The engine had around 250,000 miles on it and was being driven by my son (19 years old). I had been bugging him for a month to change the oil, etc. He was on his way to the junior college he attends to work on the car when BAM! Car dead.

If anyone lives in the Los Angeles area and is interested in buying the car for parts or to replace the engine, Please contact me via email or PM.

Ah, self explanatory then. An abused engine is a soon to be dead engine. Sigh. Mine's at 304k and still does 80mph for 90 miles every day. No explosions so far.

Oof, I feel your pain. Or rather, I will soon, when my 10-year-old boy grows up. The kid needs wheels, and you want to give him something safe and something that won't strand him someplace dangerous at 11:30 p.m. but it's a lead-pipe cinch he won't appreciate or value it the way he should, will probably crash it or ruin it through neglect. What do you do? What can you do? Nothing, that's what. You're stuck handing him the keys ...

Your turn today, my turn tomorrow, brother.
