Difference between ASD/non-ASD axles?

I'm unfortunately in the market for a new rear axle, and I'm noticing that some places only have axles which are described as "only for cars without ASR/ASD". Mine has ASD, which looks like it excludes me from the cheap rear axle club. :(

ASD is the auto locking differential. I suppose you could install a standard one and remove the ASD system, but I'd try to keep it.

you can't just install the standard axles--the diff is wider on the ASD, as well as the LSD for 201/124 chassis models. therefore requiring a shorter axle. on the 201, 1990 1/2 and newer had the shorter axles, while older models had the longer half-shafts
