The trunk badges were (are?) optional in Germany, and not that popular an option.

Regarding whether it truly is a German-market car: my 1986 grey-market Euro W201 has no VIN on the front left windshield pillar, and no manufacturing date tag on the driver door pillar. Instead, there is a plate on front of the engine compartment, right in front of the radiator.

I looked at one of these a couple years back. I bet I could have got it for just a few hundred bucks, but it was in awful shape.
It had a manual tranny but the shifter grip was torn off, so don't know if 4 or 5 speed. Velor seats in awful shape, manual AC or course and also SLS.
I wish I had purchased it for the engine and tranny stuff......

Correct. There is no mention of pretensioning seat belts in the Euro 300D owner's manual. Also, said manual is for the 200D, 250D, and 300D and shows no tachometer in the gauge cluster - just a clock, even with a manual tranny.

My car also has no ABS and no airbags. The steering wheel is the school bus MB type found in the W123s.

In case one of these comes up again. I have a 1986 250D NA. With
the 5-speed it's pretty fun to drive -- not like my alfa, but fun all the
same. Definitely all the manual controls are a plus.
