1986 Euro spec 300D 5 speed

I found a one owner euro spec 1986 300D with a 5 speed, cloth seats, wind up windows, no sun roof, and no trunk badges. The owner bought the car in Germany and brought it to the US. I believe it has the om603 engine. The car has about 200,000 miles. I plan to take a closer look and test drive tomorrow. How rare is a car like this? Are there any problems insuring a car like this? Any advice on buying a car like this. I already have a tired 1983 300DT, this car looks like an interesting upgrade.

Talk to your insurance company, give them the vin and see what they say. Don't mention it's a gray market car, though they will probably know right away.

I have a grey market 1986 W124 300D (no turbo) titled and registered in NJ as a 1986 300D. My insurance company is insuring it as a 1986 190D, which it says on the insurance card. Despite the model mismatch, I had no issues when I got pulled over several months ago for speeding (I still laugh at that).

My car is an automatic with MB Tex, crank windows, manual seats, power sunroof, and automatic CC. I've never seen another one although I think one other guy on this board has one. The NA OM603 is not the quickest diesel, but it is quiet, gets good mileage, and moves the car quite nicely once up to highway speeds. I'm at 255K miles and still on the original motor and tranny... well, now I probably just cursed myself

Post some pictures if you end up buying it.

That is going to be an NA car. Pretty rare stateside. It would be a no brainer for me if the price right.

Like an idiot I passed on a ratty turboed 250D in miami that had a 5 speed and sportline for 2500. I hit my head on the desk every day I think of it.

There was one floating around this area for a little while, but it was auto. The euro makes it cool and trendy, I would be inclined to argue the US is a "better" car, more power and more luxurious. Would I buy said 300D? Totally, manual euro is so cool.

It shouldn't be difficult to own, although climate control and window lift parts might be difficult (or new only) to find in the US.

I'd rather have a US one, for the turbo and luxury items, and add the 5-speed if so desired, but to each his own. It certainly will be an unusual piece.

I'd be very curious where the mileage is documented, as the original speedometer/odometer is no longer in the car, neither are the Euro headlamps (a shame).

I'd expect to pay about half of the asking if it were me, if the dent on the left quarter is the only body damage, some might consider it worth a premium. It is listed in the craigslist alert thread here with a link http://boise.craigslist.org/ctd/1959060315.html .

I took a look at the car today and drove around the lot. The w124 feels much smaller than than my W123 83 300D. The transmission is strange and stiff making it hard to find the right gear. What is the life span for these manual transmissions. All the labels on the doors ect are in english. The Speedometer has a clock instead of a tach and the units are in miles and Kilometers. I think I am happy with my 300D, I almost have all the little things fixed.

Its not smaller, atleast not much. Where it is a bit smaller you make up for in aerodynamic efficiency. Drive the 124 over a speed hump and see if you ever get in another W123. As long as its not grinding its probably GTG. NA's dont have tach's normally. What was the asking price?

I just noticed it has no airbag and no ABS. I guess no pretensioning seat belts either since there's no RS tag on the steering wheel.

they are asking 3995 for the car, I agree it would be a good deal for about half that price. The car doesn't have air bags, and i didn't see any signs of ABS. It does have the auto rear head rests. Do the euro cars normally have no rear model numbers on the trunk?

It probably has seatbelt tensioners, tensioner only cars didn't get an RS light in the cluster.
