87 300D Shudder Down

Marcy (my 87 300D Mercy) has started to show her age, I guess. I totaled out my Jeep about 6 months ago, so she's my only transpo right now.

A few weeks ago I noticed that whenever the car drops into idle it starts to shudder, making all the loose bits and pieces in the cabin rattle and shake. Pretty annoying. It also shudders when I turn the engine off. I'm assuming it's idling too low for some reason? Why would it just start doing that, and is there an economical solution?

What is the idle RPM? If too low, you can adjust it. If other symptoms exist (in-op tach) then likely the OVP.

Otherwise, possibly a collapsed engine mount (or two).

Marcy idles at about 750 rpm. I've adjusted the idle as far up as it will go. Doesn't seem to make much difference. I can hear the engine idling a little faster, but the tach doesn't show much difference, and the car still vibrates about the same. If I press the pedal get about 1000 rpm, the vibrating stops.

Now I've gotten into the habit of braking with my left foot to allow my right to feather the accelerator when I need drive very slowly or stop.

I'm worried the old girl is gonna rattle herself to death!

What condition are the engine and transmission mounts in?

That's a good question. How do I check that?

I find if you put one side of the car on a high kerb so it is sitting around say six to eight inches higher or more then let it idle you will find if the mounts are shot or getting bad the car will settle into a wallowing motion.

Obviously tick over rev speed plays a part but it will start to do the rumba if parts are tired.
Also in gear tick over on a steep hill with the car holding itself then just increase revs very slowly until the car starts to try and creep forward and again it will start to wallow and dance

Bad Engine Mounts

My 300D 2.5 Turbo did exactly this. It was bad engine mounts. I replaced them and the problem completely went away. It was a fairly easy fix; I had to jack up the engine one side at a time, remove the mount, and replace it. The parts were fairly expensive (I think $80 each or something).

Yup, replace the engine mounts and you will think you are in a gas powered vehicle. I had the exact same symptoms. Do it yourself, it is not difficult!

Does it happen when the engine is cold and hot? This might be out there, but I had an issue that when I would come to stop the engine would shake in drive or in park (especially once warmed up) I unplugged the EGR valve and it stopped. It may be that the Egr Valve is stuck in the open position when idling, when it should really be closed. Again - it's a long shot and is probably a engine mounts....

It pretty much happens all the time. Thanks for everyone's input! I'll test the mounts and keep you all posted.

13mm test. Place something 13mm in width between the cross member and the lower lip of the top half of the mount. If it doesnt fit, replace.

Getting one finger in there is the easiest thing to test with.
