I thought they did not sell any turbo diesel W123's in Europe. My dad worked at MB, and his family owned many of them, and they did not have any turbos. All N/A. It may be a euro with a different engine.

Different engine? Interesting! Is there a way to find that out? There is a number on top of the engine that reads "12493". Not sure if that helps... Can the vin be traced somehow?

If you have a MB dealer run a report on the car's history it will have the Serial Number of the original engine/trans on it, you can then compare that to the serial number on the side of the engine block, it is towards the driver side rear on a 617 engine I believe, if not, it is on the front somewhere.

The turbo diesel model was ONLY offered in estate variant in Europe. Sedans and coupes did not have turbo diesel models, just the non turbo for sedans but no coupe diesels in Europe.

300D Turbo = US only
300D Non Turbo = Euro + US

300CD Turbo and Non Turbo = US only

300TD Turbo = Euro + US
300TD Non Turbo = Euro + US

To answer the OP, that is a true European model with the correct engine. Only thing I would probably change are the lights, they're even early spec w/ white fogs not the proper amber.

If you pop open the hood and you notice the U tube going from the turbo from the air cleaner has another connection coming from the valve cover (breather hose) then it's a confirmed European model (the Euro bumpers, manual AC, and lack of a tachometer on an '84 also add to this).

I have seen a turbo diesel 300TD European model before and this is how it was setup from the factory.

My 1979 W116 300SD has such a set up. I'm under the impression that all W116 SD's had such a system. Maybe the standard non-EGR setup.

Hmm, maybe it is indeed the non EGR setup.

You can change the maybe to definitely. The 79 and 80 Estates in the US were non-turbo.

BTW, nice looking wagon. And you won't find many glove boxes that are aligned that straight....
Not to protect the bumper, to add some measure of protection to the body of the car which is nice enough that is would be a shame to get it dented, especially with how easy it is to whip bumpers on and off these cars.

I suggest it because the euro bumpers, while cool looking, are effectively useless as a bumper, especially on the rear of a wagon, which has over exposed tail lamps IMO and the bumpers themselves are worth some money to the right people. Meaning people buy them for a couple hundred bucks, while US spec bumpers can be found in a yard for fairly low price, (although maybe not a wagon rear).

Just a suggestion, NYC is extremely tough on cars if they are street parked, which I am sure the OP is aware of.

Pic of a similarly laid out volvo wagon after 2 years in brooklyn. Note, this car had no dents or damage when I sold it to the current owner. (of course, this does represent a worst case scenario, and this owner lives on a street with lots of business deliveries, meaning most of the damage to is is from various Isuzu trucks. The big volvo bumpers have been pretty good with parking for the most part, but he has lost a number of taillights over time)

HAH ok! I'm garaging it! That volvo is F'd up! It's funny that you bring this up because yesterday I was sitting in my car fussing with the radio (stations come in and out), and my neighbor comes out and gets into the pick up in front of me and as he's leaving, taps my car. Obviously I was upset but then I remembered that everyone in this city gives a tap (some more gentle than others).

I was considering garaging it anyway for winter to avoid the snow and the salt. Gonna check prices.

That would be wise. Euro models were not rust coated near as well as their US counterparts. They tend to rust much easier and sooner.....
