Were the valves in spec when the test was done?
|
Do any of you ever do leak-down tests? From what I've read it gives a better impression of engine health...

I have the 'Sealey' leak-down equipment to do leak-down testing, but no compressor to run it! You're right, actualy its easy with the L.D. to check exactly Where compression is lost--if any.... Failing that a standard compression check will tell most info and confirm a good engine...:) |
Yeah, a compression test will let you if there's a problem, a leak down is designed to isolate the top, valves, or the bottom, rings, as the problem area.

Those numbers look good. Is there really any reason to go on with other test? In line with: "If it isn't broke - DON'T FIX IT"
|
heck, with those numbers, I doubt there was even reason to do that test!
I bet that puppy is SMOOOOOOTH! |
Tested it cold.
Used a Harbor Freight Diesel Compression Kit. Tested through the injector ports. Adjusted the valves before the compression test. It is running a lot smoother since the valve adjustment. I'm replacing the engine mounts next- mine look like they're chewed pretty good- will replace the trans mount at the same time. I think it's had a vacuum leak since I've owned it. Gonna fix that next. That should put the cherry on top- there have been acceleration issues that I think that will fix. |
The engine was cold.
Please tell me about how this affects the test.[/QU
Hi On my 1985 300td, operating temp compression tested at almost 100lbs. higher than cold (40 degrees F.) compression. My case might be extreme - but it might be interesting for you to retest at full operating temp to see what you find. Joseph |
