SC has no inspections on any vehicles... NC has no emission inspections, just lights and brakes etc.. and they did away with the sticker, it's all automatic computer billing and noted on the registration now... scary.

JHZR2,
I agree with your accessment of the inability to check insurance, registration, and safety of older vehicles will become a much larger problem.

I will post the DMV letter delineating the law change in the AM, but there is no emmissions check, no paperwork check, no safety checks. Until changed, my older Benz & motorhome will have no sticker, and will never see the inside of a MV inspection site. I drove home tonight, still surprised.

Thanks! I'm just still suprised that the "proposed" emissions only inspection was implemented so quick...

The issue with illegal documentation holds some validity as a concern...but...working in Philadelphia...you'd be surprised how easy it is for people to obtain false documentation across the board...

The inspection stations in NJ that I've been to don't run your DL/Reg/Ins through a system...they visually inspect...your DL could be suspended and they'd never know...same with the reg

You could buy your insurance...get the card...cancel and get a return of the majority of your money and have a card that looks valid for however long your coverage period was at the time of purchase...

Not to mention the majority of people with unsafe vehicles drive them around without ever getting inspected anyway...

Having inspections be required is a nice thought...but ultimately if someone wants to operate an unsafe vehicle...or believes they have to operate it to get to work etc...they're going to regardless...

I think it's nice not having that giant sticker in the lower left corner...and the glass is so much cleaner...

Basically illegal activities will continue regardless of the law...

What I'm concerned about are the people that drive around with non-functioning brake lights and such on older cars that may never get inspected...and we're all left waiting for a cop to pull them over to get this sorted...the driver may not be aware of that sort of situation and is unwittingly putting everyone at risk...

But I see plenty of people in newer "every two" cars driving around with a similar condition and they could drive around for well over a year before their next inspection...so what does it matter? How much does a two year inspection cut down on anything anyway?

Let the responsibility fall on the driver...in all situations that should apply anyway...if you're coming up fast on a car and you don't see their brake lights on...don't you slow down anyway? I'm sure we're all used to people not using their blinkers...so if they're non-functioning anyway on someone's car...that should be on them...you could still navigate well enough...

You just have to hope the cops start pulling people over for that sort of thing...which so far they seem awfully lax in doing so...

JHZR2,
I might have misinterpreted you, but there are NO emissions testing, need not go to the inspections again, Until law changes again.

PW,
Driving up the AC Expressway daily, I see about 20-30% PA plates. No way that many people from PA are working graveyard @ the casinos.

As for inspections, I still have an aircraft mentality to preflighting, also PTI for the motorhome from CDL training, so I check everything, every morning in da bus, the car minimium weekly.

You are a bit. There never (since 2002 at least when I got my first w123), I repeat never was emissions testing on w123 diesels.

However there was inspection, in fact I took my 82 to inspection earlier this year - it bypassed the emissions stuff and just did the safety.

NJ has recently (as I understand it) done away with safety inspection on ALL cars. Now, you either get the OBD or sniffer test on gasoline vehicles. Just no safety component.

And I am assuming this came to fruition, thus for an old diesel, no emissions plus no safey equals no need to go...

It would be helpful if you could post a copy of the letter, or at least a reference document number so we can pull this down too, in case the police have a problem.

Ill be getting a reproduction 1981 and 82 sticker for my cars
