How hard is it to replace the rear windshield seal?

Everyone in a while after a rain, I see the traces of a few drops of water in my trunk. It's not streaming or gushing and that's the way I'd like it to stay, so I want to replace the windshield gasket. Is this possibly a DIY job? If not, will it cost me an arm and a leg to get it done by someone? Thanks

Alex

Are you 100% sure it's the rear windshield seal that the leak is coming from? It may also be the trunk seal, or either of the tail light seals. The latter is usually overlooked, but it is a potential cause of leaks.

Agreed. My 240d needs the rear window resealed. The window rattles in its place on my dirt road, and there is evidence of moisture damage in the header back there, along with the back dome light missing. Trunk is bone dry.

It's odd, I don't get too much water back there so I can't tell if it's from a leak, or from when I open the trunk lid. I'm pretty sure it's not the tail light gaskets. THe seal visibly looks ok. A few cracks here and there, but no chunks missing (the whole thing is in tact) and no water by the rear deck behind the seats. So, I don't really know what it is. Water doesn't exactly pool in the trunk.

Check the windshield this way: Hit it firmly with your fist. Mine will rattle slightly when I do this. You can also find a rough road and listen for sound from the rear.

On my 84 SD I've seen water droplets (perhaps a dozen) on top of each rear wheel well... I'm tempted to try some of that "Crack Cure" this spring and not mess with the rear window or the seal. Any downsides to this strategy? Will it make my rear window impossible (or more difficult) to replace?

Joe, LOL... one outcome is that I bought Diesel Power's 240d and now it is in central Texas leaking instead in Paridise Texas....
I think I have figured out how to do it myself by welding up a moving glass holder which attaches to the jack holes for reference...
If I do not get around to it between now that then... I am planning on doing it at the Spring Get together here in Austin... but hopefully I will have practiced on my car and will offer the holder/installer for use to anyone who wants to replace theirs at the get together...There were several people who benifited by others bringing their special tools to that meet and sharing...
Later,
Greg

Joe, The Austin Spring get together happens about 3 miles due west from the Austin Bergstrom Airport...If you are not still using Viking longboats for transportation we will arrange to get you from the airport to the meeting...and back...although that would be a great time of the year to see more of Texas while you are here...Chances are that you would win the "Long Distance Award"...Think about it....

I just replaced the rear seal in my '76 240d and it wasn't all that hard. The worst part was the defroster. I couldn't find wear the connections for the wires were so I cut the wires and made my own connections. The seal in my car was just like an old VW so all you need is two people (one to lean on the window) and some clothes line. Insert the clothes line into the inside groove of the seal and overlap the two ends at the bottom by about 3 inches. Position the window, have your freind lean on it and start to pull on the clothes line. Have your freind put pressure in the area were you are pulling and the seal should be pulled over the metal ridge of the window opening. The corners are a little tricky and you might want to make sure that your headliner in not loose. Make sure to put the trim into the seal while the window is out of the car. One thing I would do different the next time is to put a mark on the window and body to help with the alignment.

240 Dude,

Hey did you use a factory or aftermarket seal??? I put one in October, and it leaks 100X worse than before. I was informed over and over that the factory part was the way to go.

Looks to me that where the lower corners are molded, the seal sucks inward and the edge is shy of where the last two seals landed.

Puting it in was cake. Just pull the inside trim on the sides back, take the gounding screw loose, pull back the seal and push(gently of course). Two ppl a rope and 15 minutes is what it took.
