help ordering new brake pads
My 83 240D brake pad warning indicator light came on. Checked all the usual suspects for parts, Autozone, Napa, Checker, a few online retailers. They all want to know if my calipers are Bendix or ATE.
Minus jacking up the car and removing a wheel, is there any way to tell if my car has Bendix or ATE calipers? Let me ask this question another way, if I buy ATE pads with they fit on a Bendix caliper and visa versa? I suppose if they did, they would not be asking. Dumb question. I read in one of the posts that Pagid pads are really nice. Are they worth the money? On a side note, Napa's 12,000 mile warranty on their $17.99 brake pads is not transferrable! Does that mean if you sell the car to a new owner? Or move the pads to another car? I'm guessing with a 12,000 mile brake pad that is going to be the least of my problems. |

You'll have to inspect the caliper to see if its a bendix or ATE. Bendix calipers use 2 spring clips, and cotter pins. ATE uses 1 spring clip and friction fit pins.
I put Pagid pads on my 300D and I love them it stops excellent, much better than Textar IMO.

pads will fit either caliper. but if you need pins, or springs, it will matter which type caliper you have.
there is no other way to tell. you have to look at them.

Ask them if there are different part numbers depending on the caliper brand. I suspect that they are not different.
When I buy parts for my Jeep Wrangler, the computer operators at the parts stores alway ask if it's 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive. Anyone who thinks there is no such thing as a dumb question needs to visit a McParts store. |

Thanks much for the assistance and advice. I will order the Pagid pads $28.05 at *********************** I'm looking forward to a nice smooth pedal and no more flickering yellow warning light.
Informative websites like this combined with discount online retailers are sure to take a dent out of the Mcparts stores. I had to find a new alternator. Checker wanted $160 for a stock 55amp unit 5-7 days out. Found a more modern 115amp rebuilt Bosch alternator online for $94 shipped same day.

Hi Ricky,
Welcome to the forum. Be careful buying pads. I have found it best to always buy European manufactured ones. The local variety just dont last. The Buy Parts link at the top of the screen is always worth a try. They are genuinely interested in providing good service to members at good prices.

one more note...
pads do not come with wear sensors, so you will need to order a set of them as well.
