a/c question
I've recently done some work on my a/c system: new dryer, repair high side hose, flushed system. Took car (84 300D) to have system purged and R134 added. Shop said vent temp down to 25 degrees, everything fine bring back in 1 week to check system for leaks. Took back 1 week later still ice cold. A/C tech found 1 tiny leak where hoses attach to compressor. I tried to repair leak by tightening bolt that holds hoses to comp. and stripped hole and all gases escaped. Rethreaded hole and put in longer bolt. Installed 1 can of R134 to make sure all seals holding. System ok. My question is: A/C very cold with this 1 can of R134, how is this possible? Should I go back and evacuate again and add refrigerant, or motor on without doing anything.

I'm stuck on 25*F vent temps. Doesn't the evaporator ice over?

No, it hasn't . Maybe the a/c tech meant 35 degrees.

Where are you?
What is the ambient temp? |
1 12 oz can will provide great ICE cold air when it's cold/cool outside. it's all about total heat and movement of heat through phase change. if it's 70F outside, and cool in the car, 12oz will produce quite cold temps. most household freezors only hold 6 oz of 134... do you want a freezor in your car?

Temp was 98degrees at time of filling. I live just north of fresno, ca. My question is, should I excavate and fill or leave it alone. I thought whenever an a/c was opened up, you should excavate and get moisture out.

yes. evacuation is necessary, also replacement of the reciever dryer and accurate measurement of the exact amount of oil in the receiver so it can be replaced.
the problem lies in knowing the exact amount of oil that was blown out when the manifold popped off and the compressor dumped. best practice is to flush entire system and replace txv also, then add in exact system charge and oil as specified. |
Dang! Might as well go back to R-12 after all that.

agreed, R12 will be superior in every way.
Napa has it in stock... |
