Help identifying diesel tachometer req'd - want to fit it to my car!

G'day All,

I've recently been very fortunate in obtaining a tachometer for my 1981 W123 300D (thanks again - you know who you are!).

I've sent the attached pictures to the dealer to see if he could identify which tach amp goes with this gauge. Unfortunately he could only tell me that no tachometers were meant to be fitted to W123.130s...

Can anyone out there tell me which tach amp matches this gauge?

To be more specific:- I'm asking for a part number.

You need the one in a round plastic case tach amp on the driver's side top of wheel well. Sorry don't know the p/n. Since you're car did not come with a tach, it probably does not have the mag pickup and tooth on the harmonic balancer and you will need to obtain it plus the wiring harness from the pickup to the tach amp and tach amp to tach in order to get a working tach setup.

[but what do i know? i just got oem used rubber mats for a steal/deal on my car to find out they are not a 123 series mat.]

This is a picture of an 85 300D tach. Looks very different as motoxo pointed out.

[edit] I got it! Army has a W126 tach.

Yep, that is a 126 tach. Not only that, it's a late model unit, note the three prong tach plug.

To use the crank Hall effect reader, all have that, just the no tach models don't have an amp, with an amplifier of some sort, you're going to need a wiring harness and a two pronged tach.

The pics show a 123 cluster at the top and a 126 cluster on the bottom.

Brilliant responses - thank you very much.

Now I'll see if I can get it to fit in my W123 cluster - there must be a way... To be continued!

Good luck, the metal housing is different, but you still need an old style tach, the two pronged unit.

I've just found loads of information on tachometers here:-

http://www.superturbodiesel.com/std/adding-a-tachometer-t-97.html

(Just in case others need this sort of information too)

The alternative (modern) tach amp version is here:-

Well drat and double drat I'm running out of time on this project so I've chickened out - I'm not going to attempt to modify the tachometer I've got - I've obtained a W123 one instead.

SO

QUESTION:-

Are W126 diesel tachometers by any chance rarer / more pricey / sought after than their W123 cousins? (I'll probably be selling the W126 tachometer on)

They are very common.

Got the right one now!

Right it is a rainy Saturday here so I'm looking through the parts I have for this project.

I have got:-

1 X W123 tachometer
1 X Plug and a bit of wire for the back of the tachometer
1 X Crankshaft sensor wire and plug
1 X Bracket for the sensor that fits next to the front pulley
1 X Socket mount and wiring for the tachometer amplifier
1 X Tachometer amplifier

I just need to get the bracket for holding the tach amp assembly.

QUESTION does anyone know if these are bolted or welded to the inside of the engine bay?
