1985 300D fuel capacity

Hello Everyone

I'm trying to figure out the fuel tank capacity for my w123 1985 300D, Euro import.

I drove about 400 miles on one tank until the reserve light came on, and I put in 14.5 gallons.

How big are these tanks? Is it 17 gallons with 3 gallons of reserve?

BTW, I've been averaging 26-30MPG depending on where I'm driving.

I would think that the fuel tank would be the same size regardless of it being an import or not... Just like most of the other parts of the car. Changing too much of the car for export would not make it cost effective.

I'm not sure what you have for a reference... But in my 85 owners manual it says the fuel tank is "approx." 21.1 gallons with 2.8 of that being the reserve.

This makes good sense to me. When I ran the tank out (what I thought was out) for removing and inspecting the screen.... I still got 5 gallons out of it!!

Snookwhaler,

I had read online that it was a 21 gallon tank as well but I don't have any manuals with my car.

If my fuel tank really holds 21 gallons and my reserve light comes on after I've used 14 gallons, is there something wrong with the sensor?

How many miles do you average per tank?

I believe the 300s are 80 liters, and the 240s are 70 liters. Probably nominal, rather than actual, values.

My owners manual says it's 21.1 gal. I just came back from a trip to the Adirondacks and put 512 miles an the reserve light has not come on. I run WVO and use the stock tank for VO. Of the 512 miles 10 were on diesel. I continued driving that tank and the reserve light came on at 550 miles. I was surprised of the good fuel economy and range I got on VO.

Oh and I have a big Thule roof top box (Mountaineer) that would cut fuel economy. Without it I may gain an extra 2 mpg?

does your car have a suction noise when you take the filler lid off?
these cars are known to have collapsing tanks if the vent Bell gets clogged up... pull the trunk bulkhead out, and look at the tank and see if it's collapsed...
