The required tool is an Allen wrench, 22 MM or 7/8 inch.

One of the helpful past posts mentioned using a spark plug socket turned around so that the back of it was in the drain plug and that worked for me. Not sure if this new strainer is the same size as the one from the TD or not but if so try that out:

Not for a TD model though....it's bigger, at least in my '82

I believe that was what I used this trick in...an '82 TD.

The above info is for a wagon tank screen. A 22mm allen bit socket is needed. A sedan tank screen uses a 49mm regulat socket and had a 17mm barb threaded into it.
