pulling engine from 300DT

hi guys,
as the title states, i'm pulling the engine and trans out of my 82 300D turbo parts car this weekend. Does any one have any tips or tricks they would like to share? This will be my first engine pull as i've seen it done before on other types of vehicles, but never actually did one myself. If been reading up on all of the different threads and post in the forums for some insight but, just figured id ask the veterans who have been doing this alot longer than me. thanks

Matt

alot of guys like to pull the engine and trans as a unit. thats one heavy, dangerous mf'er, if you don't have a quality hoist. i like to separate them first, even though it takes longer, but w/ a cheap hoist it will be safer. drain your fluids first so you don't make a big mess.

Triple Check

That you've Dis-Connected EVERYTHING you should
(A "Pilot's Checklist" of removals wouldn't be obsessive)
Place ALL loose parts in plastic sandwich bags ,with the Mercedes part #
written on the bag in indelible marker (a location ,wouldn't hurt either)
I'd put a minimum 1/2 inch plywood barrier in back of the Radiator to protect it.

Emergency brakes on,and ALL wheels chocked with RUBBER chocks.
(You don't need any "assistance" from the Chassis, whilst you're busy.)

Torque Converter Bolts

Be sure to remove the 6 13mm bolts that hold the Torque Converter to the Flywheel. much easier while everything is still mounted in the vehicle.

Remove the black plastic cover on the lower side of the transmission, rotate the TC to line up the bolts.

I pulled my engine/trans first, then had to fight the bolts while on the hoist.

thanks guys! i work in parts at a dealership (not mercedes, i wish!! lol) and i "borrowed" the engine hoist from the shop so its a pretty sturdy 2 ton hoist. Im not keeping the parts car as it was rear ended pretty bad so if worse comes to worse ill just cut the rad support out to get the engine out easier. any one know off hand the weight of just the engine no trans? im wondering if my engine stand will be sufficiant. i think its a 1,000 pounder

On a w126 parts car I had for the same reason (salvage engine/tranny) there are six or eight spot welds in the radiator crossmember. I drilled those out and removed the crossmember so I would have room to take the engine/tranny out as a unit. It worked great and if someone wanted the car afterwards they could just spot weld it back on and you would'nt be able to tell it was ever removed.

I am not sure about how the crossmember is on your 300d parts car, but that made the whole process much easier. The hoist was on wheels and after lifting a few inches I just drove the whole unit right out of the car.

I had a 2 ton crane and it did'nt even grunt.

My engine stand on the other hand feels the weight of that German diesel for sure.

I am curious what the 617 weighs? auto tranny can't be that much more than 150 - 200 pounds.

almost done!!! i just can figure out for the life of me how to disconnect the electrical connection on the transmission. everything else is done and engine is hanging on the hoist the only thing holding me back is that connection.

x2 on removing the crossmember. The angle is pretty sharp with it in...I ended up cutting off the rad support with a cutoff wheel, well worth the 30 sec it took. Also, once the engine is FULLY supported by the crane, I found it easier to let the car down off the jacks and rolling it from underneath the engine, rather than yanking on the crane and having the engine swing all over--but may not be an option if the car has been in an accident.

There are several connections on the transmission. The one I imagine is giving you trouble is a black plug, you need to sort of rotate the outer case of it, and then it will allow you to pop it out.

i got so mad at mine i just pulled it off. i put it back on without the white turn thing and everything has been fine so far.

if you have an air compressor, let the air out of the tires to get the front end several inches lower. it helped me get the clearance that i needed to get the transmission out. i didn't have to use any jacks or jack stands when i did mine.

long chain for hoist. i had a good hoist and had to have it at 1/2 to give me enough distance to get in and out easily.

when you are putting it all back in, if you are doing the engine tranny combo, get a rolling jack under the mount hole on the end of the transmission as soon as you can. once you do that you can roll the assembly back and forth while lowering the hoist. jack up the tranny intermittently to get a good balance of engine height and level so that getting the motor mount bolts in is very easy.

plug in the following while the engine is on it's way in,
-rpm sensor
-starter wires
-oil pressure line

hey guys, thanks for all the tips. i finally got that sucker out and on the stand. i ended up just cutting the trans wires 5 or 6 inches from the connector. and sawing off the front rad support to get it out easier. i will be starting a restoration/ engine swap thread for the 240d and will post all of the juicy pictures there

Since you have it out, I don't have any suggestions. Congrats.
