300SD vs 300D pros and cons
Ill be buying a 300sd next week and bringing it back to road worthy condition.New trannie and a/c ,with mint interior .It will need some attention due to a wreck in the front but Ive inspected all the patients injures and its not critical. What would you say are the advantages of owning a 300sd over a 300d or vise versa.

More rattles and squeaks with the 126, better ride too.

Never been in a w123, but I've owned two w126 300SD's and driven a third.
From what I can tell they're a bit bigger, little "fancier", bit better styling. The drive trains are the same. I personally prefer the w126 big time, but I'm also 6'3" and like almost everything in my life to be at least as big as I am.

The 300SD has electric everything which can or cannot be an advantage. Personally, I'd rather have manual seats and sunroof... Also the central lock vacuum system is independent from the main vacuum pump which is an advantage as if it deteriorates it will not affect the rest of the system. I've never driven a 300D so I don't know if there's a definitive advantage over it. I really like my 300SD and probably wouldn't trade it for the 300D. A 300TD would be a different thing.

The 300D will be faster off the line. The 300sd will be cruising at lower rpm. w123's will have higher resale values than w126's in the future. The w123 is what you wan't

It's been my experience that SD stuff is easier to find in the JY, with the 126 body style you get to rob many parts from 300SD, 300SDL, 300SE, 300SEL, 420 SEL, 560 SEL, etc.
I don't see near as many 123's scrapped as I do 126. Honestly, I've never seen a TD in the boneyard.

Try finding any 126 Service manuals on CD or used Printed ones.
Out here in Southren CA I see more SDs in the Junk Yard also. I do not know if this means that more or them were sold in this area or not.

Ds have been through the yards, now it's SDs. That means SDs last that much longer than Ds

Why would the SD be at a lower RPM? D & SD have the same engine, transmissions are both 1:1, and they use the same Differential gear ratios, as far as I know. Just asking. Charlie

They're not at a lower RPM. The 300SD and D have identical drive ratios across the board, in 1985 they both got a slightly lower 2.88 instead of 3.07

The only instances in which a 300SD would have a lower cruising rpm than a 300D of the same model year is if the 300D was either a pre 1982 US spec model or a Euro 300D. Euro 300Ds and pre 1982 300Ds had the 3.46 rear diff.

I drive a non-turbo 300D W123 and a turbo 300SD W126.
So my comparison is a little different. The turbo is certainly easier in mountain terrain. Ultimately I would prefer a Turbo W123 300D. I do enjoy driving the 300D more than the 300SD. But for creature comfort and long highways the 300SD wins. Both cars are driven daily at our house, both are easy to maintain.
