rear hatch shock removal 300td
I have a 1980 300TD and I bought new shocks. Only problem is I cannot get the old ones out. The Alan key hole is stripped out and i'm looking for suggestions on removing them. I guess I could always cut the head off the bolt, but I didn't know if it threads through to the other side?

Depending on how rounded out it is, you may be able to use a Torx bit and pound it in.
Or, if it's not too bad, dab the end of the allen in a bit of cleanser, such as Comet, this will enable you to get a "bite" on the hole. I take a zip top bag with some in it when I hit the junk yard.

IIRC some have allen heads, some have tripple square heads. I think it's the 8mm of them.
if you are using an allen in a tripple square bolt, you will have issues.

Its a special bolt not easy to find - best to save if possible. My 1985 300td required a Triple Square bit which is completely differant than allen or torex. I had to drive the bit in to seat it firmly in the bolt head and then it took a good twist to break the bolt free. Good Luck, Joseph |
