Headlights

I changed the headlamps and the broken/cracked supposed to be clear plastic trim on my 84 300SD this evening and discovered a problem.
Both headlamps and the piece they attach to are able to move in and out at the bottom of the headlamp. Only the headlamp and mount move. The trim and the rest of the headlight assembly are tight and do not move. All the fasteners etc are on and tight.
My wife drives this car to work so I have not disassembled them yet to try to figure out what retains the bottom of the mount for the lamps.
Is there supposed to be a spring or something that keeps the bottom of the lamp mount tight?
I am sure no pieces flew apart when I took the lamps out so I guess they have been moving around for some time now.
It appears the bottom of the light can move in and out approximately 1/4 to 3/8 inch.
Any ideas or suggestions?
Darrell

There should be and "L" shaped bracket at the bottom of the H/L bucket, where it mounts to the radiator support.

Or are you talking internal to the headlamp assembly? Internally, there are little plastic ball joints and such that can break. They are part of the adjusting mechanisms. It's not hard to disassemble the lights. You can either buy another headlight assembly or disassemble a broken assembly for the parts and rebuild yours.

I'm thinking it is part of the adjusting mechanism.
I can see what looks like a rod that is free to move within a channel at the bottom of the headlight bucket. It looks like there may have been a rubber bushing or something similar that takes up the extra space to prevent the movement.
I guess the next step is to try to find some parts to fix it.
Thanks for the help.
