83 MB 300 CDT Turbo Grommet

Should the lower tube with the O ring be pushed into the oil pan or pulled up into the grommet?

Alternative grommet replacement is to pull the compressor housing to expose the lower drain tube. 6 compressor bolts of which the 6 oclock bolt is difficult. Use PB and break all bolts. Need a paper compressor gasket and two O rings. The 6 bolt must be turned out while pulling the housing forward. The upper tube is left in place. Reverse going in. Install requires patience on the 6 oclock bolt. Drop cloth needed to catch dropped bolts. Parts required are compressor paper gasket and two O rings. Clean aluminum surface. A cut in half 13mm helped. I used a little RTV to hold in place.
Done as part of turbo overhaul ************** kit. Time consuming for me. Very nice improvement engine response below 2000 rpm.

Turbo Grommet

Thanks for the boiling water suggestion to soften the grommet. My original repair leaked so did it again. I removed the turbo several times due to whine. The turbo wheel/shaft and compressor wheel required balancing. It was significantly out of balance. Still had the same whine issue on install of balanced turbo/compressor. Turbo tech retorqued the nut and the problem was solved. I used a 3/8 inch 6 inch box end to torque and had a little too much. The recommendation is 80 - 90 degrees tighten and alignment of balance marks shaft to compressor wheel.
Third grommet replace this year. First $150 leaked after 4 months. Found they used RTV. My second leaked. Third try went in properly. Recommend pushing the tube with the O ring down into to its seat, then slide the grommet down to seat. The O ring should be the primary seal. Test by leaving the grommet off and seating.
I prefer removal of the compressor housing and/or the center turbo section for the repair. Best done during turbo overhaul.
