Wastegate stuck?
My air filter decided to remove itself thanks to the rubber mounts failing, so while it was out I decided to check my turbo bearings, alda hose and all of that.
Turbo Bearings are decent, small amount of play but it spins very freely. Alda hose not plugged, but there is no air pressure coming through it. I took off the banjo bolt on the manifold, revved the engine and all i get is vacuum from what I can feel (I know I know, use a gauge, im getting one today) I get vacuum, vacuum vacuum and then when i let off the throttle there is a sudden burst of pressure. ALDA is turned 3 turns towards "more fuel" I cant remember if it was ccw or cw now, been a while since Ive adjusted it. I get no smoke at all. ever. until about 4-5k rpm there is no smoke at all out the exhaust, and the car has always been extremely low on power vs my dads 83 300d (turbo) and even my brothers naturally aspirated 300d Is it possible my wastegate is stuck open? 617.950 in a 116 body with a garrett turbo, I've searched and searched and I think its the pressure activated model so I'm going to try the air compressor trick and see if i can hear it moving. I took the wastegate hose off the turbo and still get the same vacuum at the manifold. is it possible to remove the actuator and clean it up on this model? Sorry for my stupid questions all the time, Tom

Without a load you aren't going to see much pressure, but the engine will slow down before the turbo, giving you the pressure pulse when dropping the throttle.
The gauge will tell you more but it sound normal so far.

you're going to have to get a turbo pressure gauge, and plumb it into the cabin, so you can see what pressure you are getting under load.
I gotta do the same thing, my 87TD is taking 12 seconds or so to reach 60...

ok, i got a compound vacuum/pressure gauge from harbor freight (gotta love that place lol)
plumbed it into the manifold directly, unhooked the alda and drove around the block. 8-9 psi. thats good. reconnected the hose to the manifold, hooked into alda line with a t, 8-9 psi, still drives basically the same as it did with the alda disconnected. one thing I noticed though: one banjo bolt has washers on either side of the line, the other has no washers on either side, should they both have them or neither of them?

Banjo bolts should have washers both sides.
