Throttle linkage lubricant
 

Just wondering what the proper lubricant is for the throttle linkage. While I'm at it, how about for the sunroof track and guides? Thanks to all for any info.

I think you use ATF to lube the throttle linkage.

The sunroof needs a special lubricant.

Yep, during regular maintenance, ATF is used.
If the linkage is being replaced or is otherwise disconnected during repair work, then use high temp bearing grease in the cup and ball style linkage ends (small squirt or dab in the cup end).
On the roof slides, MB sells a slide paste for this application. At the dealer we get it in about a 10-15 oz. can, I believe they may sell it in tubes for the general public, or else I believe "Lubriplate" will work well for this application.

I have used standard wheel bearing grease for the ball/sockets. I think the books say to use hyd fluid. I figured that bearing grease was good enough and it won't dry up. I used a Q-Tip to lube up the sockets.

The original manual calls for hydraulic oil. For convenience, I use a lithium-base spray grease. I just lubricated it last week and what a difference. Very smooth throttle operation and it's much easier to regualte engine power and transmission shifts.

Very handy for thight places. I use it also for all the hinges and latches.

Do you spray with the ball in the sockets or you take them out first?

It seems that the balls are simply forced into the sockets. What is the correct way to take them out?

Yes, I used white lithium spray grease. Please don't tell me that I screwed up and this grease is going to ruin everything that touches...or some other horror story seen on this board!! I'm kidding...

I disassembled most of the linkage with a screw driver being careful not to bend anything. I filled the sockets with grease...and sprayed the hinges while moving them through their normal range of motion.

I also lubricated the gas pedal hinges.

What a difference...and it only took me 10 minutes to do it. No wonder the original manual lists this lubrication procedure as very important.

Greases are ok in moderate climate,but tend to stiffen up in extreme cold.I would suggest the ATF.Another important lube point is the little centering pin on the door latches.A little silicone paste on them will keep you from having to throw a body block to get the dor open.
