MB to put 201hp 4 cylinder turbo diesel in W221
As usual, we won't see it in the United States.
http://blog.caranddriver.com/mercedes-benz-bringing-s250-cdi-to-paris-probably-not-to-u-s/ For 4 cylinders, it can still scoot. 0-62 in 8.2 sec, top speed of 149mph. While the US market would probably not want a 4 cylinder S-class, it seems like this engine would be fine in the US market if placed in a C-class, or even an E-class.

Well, just another well built, fuel efficient, desireable car we won't have available in here in the US, because ...

If it makes it to Australia, I will take one for a test drive & let you know what its like.
I can remember when Cat put a tricked up 4 cyl in their road graders, they were a gutless POS. When all is done you cant beat cubic inches !!!

MB decided long ago that in the US, it will only be seen as a luxury brand. a 4cyl diesel engine in their big sedan doesn't sound like luxury. And what if it had a non-leather interior? Oh my.
Perhaps they need a toyota brand to their lexus, so they're more willing to bring such things in. |

That opinion will change when fuel creeps up to $5-6-7 a gallon like in Europe. Driving an SUV and having it cost 40 cents per mile in fuel is going to get mighty steep for most people.

I would absolutely consider a new S-Class with a high efficiency 4 cylinder.
It really rubs me the wrong way that we have a large contingent of people in this country that preach higher fuel efficiency, and yet we dont have access to the vehicles that are already available ! Truly an example of hot air blowing off the hill in Washington.

I know someone who has driven a demonstrator, he reckons unless you are nailing it, e.g. if you are driving it properly and smoothly like a luxury limo, it's hard to tell what's under the hood.
