Wagon Hatch gas pressure springs ?????
Has anyone here replaced the (as MB calls them) gas pressure springs that hold the hatch in the open position.I got a pair from a JY wagon that the hatch was already gone,i unbolted the hinges from the body to relieve the pressure to get the mounting pins out.I have looked in the CD manual and there is little help there,it seems to indicate that it is not necessary to remove the hatch to r&r those things. Any help from someone who has done the job would surely be appreciated. TIA Don

SUPPORT THE HATCH WELL WITH A SOLID PIECE OF WOOD OR STEEL BEFORE ATTEMPTING!
all the rear headliner trim needs to come down, then you unbolt the old strut, and put in the new one. since you have used ones, have you tried to compress them by hand? if you can, forget them. if, with all your weight you can not get them to budge, they may be good. these things have AMAZING power. they REALLY have to be stout to hold that massive door up with the poor angle of lift they have.

I replaced mine last week with Junk yard finds also and it works great (mine came off a 95 so that helped). The hatch does NOT need to be unbolted. Two people would be best as it helps to move the hatch a little as you install them.
The rear plastic panel next to the headliner has several screws. Pull it toward the rear of the car as it stays up on two plastic clips. If you force it they will break. It will then come off easy. There is a bar that supports the headline at the very rear. Again pull the bar back and it will pop off two clips and most othe rear headliner will hang down. You may have to pop a couple of the headliner clips on the sides to get access to the lift pumps. It is poorly designed IMO but at the front of the pump is a pin held in with a metal tab from the roof rail. You will need to pry it up and away to remove the pin. It took vise grips and a little twist to get them out. You may know this if you got them from the junk yard. For installation -I would recommend attaching the rear, outer most pins first then you can line up the forward most ones (with the lagre pins) last and will go in much easier. I found some needle nose pliers worked well to remove and install the retainer clips on the rear pins. The hatch has a lot of lift now and I saved well over $100 by getting good used ones. Hope it goes well for you......

The hatch is HEAVY! As previously noted, but needs to be reiterated...
All I had to remove was the rear speaker tray. There should be holes in the headliner where the bolts are for the end of the struts. But the rear edge of the headliner can be unlatched if you want to see everything better. Have a bottle brush on hand to clean the compost out of the strut cavities. -Andrew

And if you need a pair of really good (barely) used ones, I won't be needing the ones from Betty. PuffTMW has a brand new pair as well.
The ones from Betty have about 18mo on the clock.

Ah, missed that he has an '87.
Then I don't think my hatch struts will work for him...

I was almost decapitated this morning by my wagon hatch. I'm going to have to do this soon.
Time to get me some struts..... Are there certain years of wagons that take a special type of socket/bit to remove the screws?

also remember, Always leave the rubber boot in there (dk if it's part of the shock or not) I took mine out... BIG mistake. it's also another reason I have to redo this repair. if you leave them out your car will leak. like a sieve

Thanks for all the help. I am pleased to hear that the hatch really does not need to be removed. The new/used cylinders i got will not move at all with all the weight i can put on them, but did move OK with a big piece of pipe on the hinge (hatch was off) so i feel pretty sure they will be good. The old ones on the car hold the hatch up OK when its dry but if it rains the little bit of weight the rain adds is more than they can handle. Thanks again for all the help. Don

Sieves don't leak, they're supposed to do that.
