1981 300D temp sender

The temp guage on my '81 300D has been dead since I bought the car. Unplugged the wire from the sender and used a separate wire to ground but didn't see the needle move.

Two questions

1. This is the dumber question of the two: I have a new/spare sending unit I am going to install. When I remove the current sender, I should expect to lose some coolant that I will need to replace, yes?

2. But more important: If this doesn't solve my needle problem, what are some other probable causes? The rest of my instrument cluster is functional. Removed and inspected the connections on the back of the cluster and the connections are all solid and clean.

Thanks again guys.

ZC

it won't solve the problem if your needle did not move when grounded.

Fair enough.

Any thoughts on what else would cause this problem other than the guage itself being toast?

I'd pull a used, known working one from a cluster, and try it. when all else fails, it's usually a ground issue. the cluster has metal ground points, and brittle plastic... verify it all.

Are you sure you're grounding the right wire inside the engine compartment? Can you do a direct connection to the guage?

that is a good point. are you sure you are grounding the correct sender wire? the engine temp sender is on the side of the head, below the injectors between glow plug 2 and 3 I think...

As usual you guys hit the nail on the head. Guess I wasn't grounding the wire properly. Swapped the sender and all is well now. Thanks guys.
