alternator question
I have a 2005 CDI and shortly I want to replace the alternator as I have 121,000 miles on the vehicle and I drive across country at times or remote areas. Can anyone tell me the part number and amps. Napa has a new Bosch 150 amp that they say is OEM and new costs about $433. Looks like 2 bolts and plug to replace plus the belt. Thanks -steve

At least if you buy a new one you can keep the used one you know still works in your Trunk because you do not need to turn the old Alternator in as a core.

121k is not that many miles, unless you're ultra paranoid. You could disconnect the belt and turn it to see how smooth the bearings still move....and check the voltage regulator if it has one that is removable.....that would give a good indication of its health.

if it were me, I would look up the local auto-electric shop in my area, and have them pull the alt and inspect the bearings and brushes. they can take care of a good alt, and give it another good 100K in life!
while you have everything apart, inspect any tensioners, and pulleys for play or wear.

be sure you carry a spare belt, the tools to change said belt, and fluids for you and the car when traveling remote locations!

Some one who is on that EPC is going to have to look up the Part Number for him.
I am also having trouble understanding the Goal. While it is true new items have less of a chance of having trouble than Rebuilt items do; buying something new is not an absolute guarantee you will not have problems. I can understand wanting to have an extra Alternator in the Trunk in case one goes bad (if I was in a remote area); but it sounds like the steve tampa is trying to avoid having to swap Alternators on the road somewhere. At the Parts Geek place they had Rebuilts; even with the core charge added were $215. This means you could by 2 Rebuilt Alternators and not send in any cores for $430.

Don't do business with Parts Geek, if anything goes wrong you will have a miserable time rectifying it. Just look at their returns policy, they basically have 5 ways from Sunday to not refund you. Plus no one ever answers their customer service number.
I've bought from them in the past and had no issues but when something went wrong as in my case, something totally their fault, thats when you see the true cost of lower prices. I may do business with them again but not for expensive items, too risky.

Here's how I did mine (and one of our other ones):
I've covered nearly 30,000 miles in the past 2 years with this setup, and it works beautifully.

and since you did not change the stock wire from the block to the battery, your original wire would have worked beautifully as well. unless your original wire was damaged already...

The original was two small old wires, why bother when for $5 I had a nice thick one that bolted right in place with the proper ends on it already?

Hey,
You have a diesel, the alt is only necessary to keep the fan belt tight. If some place remote, just turn everything off & keep going. I have done it many times. The battery is good for a few hours at least. There are many other parts that I would be concerning myself about before the alt.

I think I used a 2 gauge wire on mine, but that is overkill. We used a 4 on the other car and it was fine too.
