Thumbs up 300SDL cruise amp substitute?

Does anyone know if a similar year gasser cruise amplifier will work in place of the Diesel one? Or for that matter, what else can swap with the SDL one? I read the 81-85 SDs can, can 90-91 350SD/L work too?

My local JY just acquired two very clean 420s ('86 and '87) and both have newish cruise amps, but still the early 14 pin design without the coding end plug thing. Plus pile of SDs.

If this plays out wrong, I will just go Programma or GDL.

My SDL finally has an entire new front end and new tyres... so it is now my long distance freeway car, so having working cruise would be a big plus.

Depends on what they use for a speed sensor. Gasser tach amps would be unlikely to work in a diesel.

since speed is determined by the transmission output, I don't see why it wouldn't work. the speedometers work in our cars. it's possible they would be calibrated for a taller rear gear ratio though...

The taller ratio would only cause the cruse to have a higher minimum speed threshold. If the speed sensors ( the pick up signal generator) are the same, the unit wont know what sort of car its in.

This is sort of a non answer; I have done it, but. The module I got from the junkyard is the later version with the coding plug. I did not change the coding plug to the SDL version, BTW there is a list of coding plugs in the 126 manual, but there is no table of car model numbers vs coding plug numbers. Anyway to cut to the chase, the unit works, but cuts out, mainly on level sections of road. This leads me to believe that the problem is due to the wrong coding plug, because the gas and diesel cars have different power characteristics.

^ Often times that is an indication of a failing amp.

The pic shows the amp, control unit, for a 126.125, an SDL. And a cross reference.

Thumbs up

Anyone have an idea of the price of the coding plug?

I heard they are NLA, but you should be able to transfer the one over from your dead amp.

Exclamation

My SDL did not have an external coding plug.

Looks like I am going to have to break down like my LeFever and purchase a newly reman unit.
