Question Indy just told me something I don't understand

He called me and said the "pivot pin" on the RR wheel suspension was broken. He admittedly said he didn't know what it was called, it looked something like a ball joint. Said it had been broken a long time because it was rusted and was surprised the wheel hadn't gone askew. What part is he talking about and what does it do? This is on my son's 85 123.

TIA,

It sounds like he's talking about the connection between the rear trailing arm and the frame.

Is that a common failure point? Is it a part you can replace or do you need to replace a significant part of the suspension? I'm wondering how big a job this is. He is currently trying to find the part(s) for me.

I've never had a failure there. I think the new part would have to be alligned correctly and welded to the frame. The trailing a itself is fairly easy to replace, it's not clear which part he's talking about.

Maybe it was just the bolt, or a used trailing arm?

In a 124 it is a bushing/bearing that takes the place of a lower ball joint on the rear wheel, not sure what a 123 has there.

The only thing that looks like a ball joint is the arm for the anti roll bar.
There are 2 pivot points at the front of the trailing arm on the rear of a w123. Its nothing like a w124.
If its a pivot point, you will need a new one. Dont like the sound of rust. There are a few posts about rust in the trailing arm. Dont try & repair them !

John,
That is one name for them.
If some one tells me something is broke, I ask them to show me & I get the camera phone out.

My thought as well. Only ball joint seeming fixture I can think of in the back of a 123.

If that's what it is, click on the "buy parts" button above, an easy install.

It sounds like he is talking about the big bolt that holds the trailing arm to the car's frame, not the link.
