Tach sensor clearance

Greetings: What is the recommended clearance between the tach sensor and the "plug", "tooth" whatchamacallit on the harmonic balancer? I set it for 0.012" and the tach seems to work when I did a test-assembly of all my components. Thanks (1983 300D Euro non-turbo)

A good rule of thumb for VR sensors is about the thickness of a credit card.
