1981 240D Engine will not shut off!!<<<<
So I decided to start my own post to try and get to the bottom of why my 1981 240D won't shut off. It will not shut off with the key or with the engine stop lever. I recently had to replace the ignition/key assembly do to the key not turning and am wondering if I got the lines on the back of the switched swapped....
The vacuum systems on these cars are totally new to me...I am going to invest in a mighty vac soon but need someone to point me in the right direction. If I suck on the line going to the shut-off switch on the IP the car will shut off.... Suggestions???

Should be a brown line going to the shut off valve. Until you get the MityVAc, run a piece of vacuum hose from the shut off valve out thru the hood at the cowl. You can then shut it down by sucking on the line and avoid having to open the hood to turn it off.
Once you get your Mity Vac, post back. First thing to test would be the vacuum at the brown line with the engine running and key moved to the off position.

however, IF the stop lever is not working, you have linkage issues. with the engine off. have someone step on the accelerator. you watch the linkage, and see how far from the stop it goes.
adjust what's loose. see if it stops now!

adjusted the linkage and now the engine WILL shut-off with the stop lever. However, it is still not shutting down with the key, but will on ocassion.

Auto or manual?
If Auto, try this: There are three vacuum lines going to the 3 way valve on top of the valve cover. One of them is going to the tranny. Start the car, turn off the key, then get out and pinch one of those vacuum lines (or disconnect, one by one, and hold both ends closed with your fingers which is equivalent). If pinching one of those lines shuts off the car, you need a new plastic three way valve that sits on top of the valve cover. They are known to leak.

start looking at all the vacuum tees and connectors in the engine bay. I'll bet you have a cracked one. another possibility is the door lock stuff is leaking.
disconnect the yellow line from the tees and plug the tee with a golf tee, and see if that shuts it down.

I had the vac lines reversed on my Shut Off switch on the key assy and the engine wouldn't shut off. Soon as I reversed the vac lines it worked properly.
